What's new

Brown Leaf Acquisitions -- August 2024

I just purchased 2 oz. of Cowboy Coffee tobacco, a Virginia/Kentucky blend with "a splash of mild Cavendish," from the Country Squire in Jackson, MS. It's in their "Non-Aromatics" section. For me, the selections all appear to be on sale for $5.94/oz., but the staff assured me they are not having a sale right now; it's $6.60/oz. Though I cleared my browser cache twice and tried a different browser, the "Sale" price remained. They were nice enough to send me a coupon code for free shipping for my trouble, but that was only good on 2 oz. or more.

Anyway, the stuff should be interesting. . . .

Three tins of Saint Espresso arrived today from SP. I'm trying to reduce my hoarding footprint to a slightly more realistic level, so I didn't order the max 8, since I still have a decent amount from the first tin from last year.

And, since I have more Escudo than I will ever get to smoke, I tossed in a 5 pack of My Father cigars to get to the free shipping threshold.

So directly, the pipe carving block I got last month. However, not directly a BL purchase, the sander (purchased today) will be used for helping me shape this block (and future ones as well). Finally decided to move on from the Dremel. Will probably still use it for other finer detail sanding as I make this pipe. Should be fun!

Took advantage of the weather today. It was nice and cool in my little shop. The new sander worked fantastically for me too! Did a dual stain on it and I think it came out pretty well.

Wednesday of last week, we had our local pipe club meeting. One of the members, who only came a few times, had recently passed away. In his will, he passed along a fairly large box of various tobaccos. In it was several sleeves of Orlik GS, a sleeve of Erinmore, about 2lbs of Tinderbox Chartwell, and several other tins. Below is a small sample of what was split between 5 of us who were present. I intend to pass along some tins to a friend here who has just started smoking a pipe. Overall, the gentleman who passed his cellar along will be missed. He was a kind man, a professor at a local college, well read and quite engaging. He will be missed.

Did a stem upgrade on the kit briar I had done a few weeks back. I decided to get a Forever Stem from Vermont Freehand and sand down the tenon to make it fit into the pipe shank. It’s a solid fit too. Took about 30min or so to sand down. Even put a slight bend in the stem too. Should be ready to smoke hopefully later this upcoming week. 😎

Go for it if you’ve not had it before! It’s pretty darn good after about a few years in a jar!
I never have. The perique concerns me: I know Haunted Bookshop has it, and that blend I did not like (or maybe wasn't ready for). Is LBF strong on the perique? And how about the Luxury Navy Flake, which I think they also carry at that shop?

From what I can remember, I don't believe the perique in LBF is all that strong in this blend. The cavendish helps to tame the spiciness of the perique. That being said, when aged a few years, the sweetness of the Virginias are really enhanced. That is possibly helped by the cavendish as well. To me, a 2-4 year aged LBF blend really starts to hit its stride.

As for LNF, I have a few jars set aside but haven't tried any in quite some time. I plan to have a smoke tonight if it's cool enough. I'll crack a jar of LNF to try it and see how the perique has settled.
