British Relatives what to ask for

My Wife's family lives in England and they often come to visit. I'm planning ahead this time and I'm going to make a shopping list.

My question is; what items should I ask them to pick up for me that are the most cost effective and hard to get in the States.

I'm not sure of pricing in the USA, but why not start with a list of the things that you would like to try and go from there? You can then check for availability and price in the States before adding items to your definitive list for the in-laws.

My suggestion would be to steer clear of the fancy stuff like the 3 T's, Creed etc as these will be difficult to find unless your relatives live in London and even then they'd probably have to make a trek to Jermyn Street. Also remember that they will have to pay UK sales tax which is currently 17.5% increasing to 20% from Jan 2011. You can probably get these items from a US vendor for the same or less than your relatives can buy them in the UK. Or order from The English Shaving Company tax-free with their current free shipping offer.

What I would ask my British relatives to get is those items that are easily available in supermarkets and drugstores there, are cheap so they don't have to lay out a lot of money and which I'd like to try for the experience. My wishlist is
Palmolive stick (at least 6 of these!)
Palmolive cream
Erasmic stick
Erasmic cream
Real Shaving Co cream

Real Shaving Co. Cream is available in the States at the Rite Aid Drug Store chain. Last I checked, it was under $5.00 for their two varieties of creams (Moisturizing & Sensitive). It's also available from the RSC website for $4.00, but you need to add in shipping costs. It's excellent stuff, but no need to bring it over from the UK.

I travel to London for work fairly frequently. The only time I have found pricing on what i use is better there is if I'm staying in Mayfair and can easily walk to Trumper's on Curzon street. Their cream in 15 quid in the shop and $30 here in the US. But if you have to go out of your way to get to the shop then it is not worth the time and hassle to save ~5 dollars.

If it were me I'd see if they could find some old british made DE razors in antique shops or a cool old fasioned scuttle this would leave you with something you can keep for a lifetime that links you to them, the creams and soaps come and go but the razors or scuttles will always be treasured and make you think about your reletives each time you use or look at them

+1 on the Palmolive sticks and creams (almost any supermarket chain) - I'd also ask for Ingram's Shave Cream (SuperDrug) and Body Shop Macca Root Cream (Body Shop), Tesco own brand razor blades are also worth a try.

The only place I can buy nice old scuttles is from ebay England, like this:

And a bigger +1 on the vintage English razors, they got to be found there. For myself, the only place I can find Wardonia is ebay England.

Good Luck!!

+1 on the Palmolive Cream.

Another great High Street cream is Boots Cool Cologne Lather cream. Also, Real Shave Co. creams can be bought in Poundland, where as the name suggests everything costs £1.

I think vintage DEs are about as common in British shops as they are in North American ones, ie not very.

My plan to date is to ask them to bring me the drug store creams, because I know that even though I told them I'll pay for the stuff, they'll refuse. I don't want them dumping a bunch of money on my shaving habit, although I wouldn't mind a few enablers.

My brain got off its leash again tonight, and I thought just to have them ask around the family and send over there neglected safety razors, they will probably think I'm funny or a bit on the eccentric side, which I am.

Never knew they did a set with Woodspice Shaving Cream. The Woodspice aftershave balm is one of my favourites and very good value. Cant wait to try the matching shaving cream :001_smile

Just checked the main WOODSPICE page and its a shame they only have the shaving cream in 50ml. Disappointing
