Bristle loss on a Merkur Futur

Hi Guys, I'm on what is now my THIRD Merkur futur brush.

I'm suffering bristle loss on this, and happened on the last two also.

I've had them all replaced FOC, but I am astonished that this is happening. The first took a year, the second a month or two, and the third is now a few months in and losing 10 bristles every shave. They seem to be coming more from the centre of the knot.

Any thoughts?

I'm using top quality shaving creams only: Acqui di Parma; T&H No. 10; Taylors etc etc, and in a wide bowl to gently whip up a great lather (which it really does being silver tip). It gets rinsed in cold water and shaken dry. I don't travel with it - I use a synthetic bristle for that as I wanted to rule that out as a problem.

Bristle loss at the center of the knot is often indicative of a brush that's been mashed down into the face or lather bowl causing the hairs to break off. Any brush will lose hair if this is done. Are the hairs that are coming out of the brush shorter, or are they full length? If they are full length its a problem with the knot itself. If they are shorter, the hairs are breaking off and that is more indicative of user error like mashing the brush down. But, as long as Merkur is willing to replace the brush I'd say let them.

+1 This is my thought, but it could be just that they are poor quality brushes. Good luck.

I would continue to use it for a while before freaking out. It is typical of my experience that new brushes will lose hairs, and bigger brushes will lose even more. My 28mm silvertip lost on average 5-10 bristles per shaves for 3 months straight. Now, it loses 1 max.

+2. Be careful with using too much pressure when pushing down. But as said, if Merkur is replacing it then you are covered. But perhaps to avoid the hassle I would try lightening up the pressure also just to see if that is the cause.
