What's new

Briar PIFe

Okay it seems there is some interest in a pipe PIF. I have a briar, round shank, apple shaped pipe made for and sold through David’s Briar Shoppe, a Midwest pipe and cigar store, about 25 years ago. Stem fits tight and has some slight teeth marks (see photos.) The bowl has minimal cake, in fact it appears it was never fully broken in. There are minor cosmetic blemishes on the outside including a small, unfilled pit visible in the first pic.

For this PIF I’d like to see poems describing what you enjoy, or hope to enjoy if you are new, about smoking a pipe.

This will run until Nov. 1[SUP]st[/SUP], with a winner chosen on the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP]. Multiple entries will be allowed and encouraged, but only after an initial 10 individuals have entered.

The winner will be determined by the entry I like best.
This PIF is open to: New or veteran pipe smoker and any location worldwide.

Pipe will be shipped as is and not disinfected. The winner of the PIFe can take care of that in whatever manner they are most comfortable.

A cool fall eve
A brisk winter night
I light up my pipe
Ease my plight

Slow down for a spell
Listen to it sear
Smoke rings I blow
Circles of blue and white

I am still new to the pipe
A cheap briar I light
And cracked today
I would enjoy the PIFed delight

The second day of November is very dear to me
'Twas the day of my birth, when I joined the family tree
Your pipe is of the finest kind, all of us will agree
It's not the craftmanship, quality, or fine pedigree
Your pipe is cherished by us all, mostly because it's free
:biggrin1:

In a life that moves so fast,
Short do indulgences seem to last.
This old art, nearly lost,
Should be preserved, at all cost.

Simple tools fulfill their role,
Care is used to pack the bowl.
A gentle first charring light,
Anticipation of impending delight.

A breezy day, leaves are falling,
A gentle puff, leaves plumes trailing.
The mind at ease, the buds entertained,
A moment's bliss, an art sustained.

Simple pleasures, seem so few,
That men can enjoy, both old and new,
And through time, it forms connections,
Of thoughts, memories, and delectations.

With an Old English D
This pipe I hope shall be
Added to my collection
Used to smoke and add reflection
Of the finer things in life
not of worry or any strife

I'll enjoy the warmth of this fine briar
Next to a crackling open fire
The full packed bowl I will stoke
Puffing mild, delicious smoke

Interesting part of the forum this is
Can’t say I am interested in a pipe just yet
I bet I will someday get into this bowl business
Whilst I await that time I’ll sit out for a set

Good wood and fine craftsmanship
I can see why on a traditional shaving site
A hobby like this would fit well on the hip
Something about it all just seems right

Good luck to all those who make entries
Though the competition is bound to be stiff
The winner joins a tradition spanning centuries
Joamo, what a generous PIF

The harvest pipe

A cool, crisp breeze, the wind is churning
Lighting my pipe shouldn't be a burden
But as mother nature's breath begins to flee
The light of my match falls with the leaves

A break in the wind, the time is coming
A few brisk puffs with the fire burning
But it's only to tease, as I tamp it out
A second light with the pipe in mouth

The dark amber color, the leaves are turning
My pipe is cool, and its slowly burning
I follow the words of the book in hand
I'll read each one until it tastes bland

Wow, a generous PIF, I have to say
I’d like to jump head-first into the mix
And since Jmallen5 mentioned his birthday
I’d like to state I was born November 6[SUP]th[/SUP]

This pipe is better than my MM or basket briar
Or my currently ‘being refurbished’ estate
I suppose this potential upgrade to my rotation
May cause my chubby cranium to inflate!

I guess I could just put together the means to buy one
And do my best to conceal the purchase from my wife
Though she barely tolerates the wet-shaving collecting fun
And would most likely take out a contract on my life.

So my friends, if I win this PIF, I’ll give you all a warning
I’ll be changing my name, plastic surgery for my protection
But with this briar, I’ll certainly wake up every morning
With an impressive, rock hard pipe… collection!

Here I sit with pipe in hand,
The weight of the day is gone.
I pull out a tin, my favorite brand
I strike a match and puff on.

Grey smoke swirls high above my head,
Puff by puff my pipe burns hot.
I watch the smoke grow high and spread,
Stop smoking my pipe, I can not.

Gnarled hands pull at a battered pipe.
Hands that have been battered and bloodied,
blistered and bruised through 40 years of hard work.
"I remember one old hickory I helped cut,"
The memory is sweet and strong like the smoke rising from his pipe.
"We had an 8 foot crosscut, and we were still beating
our fingers to death on that tree,"
The smoke hangs thick, the aroma is strong.
"It took us over 9 hours to cut that sucker down."
The smoke is gone, the odor is lingering,
and the memory is dead until the next lighting.

I puff on my pipe,
Letting the smoke curl on up
It drifts by my eyes.

Aroma lingers
On the cool, crisp Autumn air
Then it's blown away.

The pipe is now done
The burning ember is out
Thus ends my haiku.

Sitting on my porch, puffing my briar pipe
Winters coming, hafta keep warm on these friday nights,

So many flavors and tastes for my mouth,
Just wish my cold butt could smoke in the house,

Its new to me, pipe smoking, so my mouth might just burn
And that'll probably suck, but how else can one learn?

I'd hope to enjoy it, like the rest of the gents,
Cus cigars are expensive, and im counting my cents.

Thanks for the chance!!

There once was a shaver named TheVez2
Who wanted to take up pipe smoking too
Then he saw Joamo's PIF
And wrote this limerick in a jif
Because he thinks he'd enjoy a David's briar, don't you?

This one is closed, there were some great poems and insights into why some people smoke pipe.

Now for a winner.......... GreekGuy!!

Congratulations!

I stopped writing poetry altogether after I penned my review of Haddo's Delight on tobaccoreviews.com.

I must have short circuited something in my brain. (Not the first time.)

Thanks so much Joama! This is incredibly generous of you, I'm very much looking forward to the pipe.

Congratulations to everyone for the fantastic poems!
