Breath fresheners, a strange one Sen-Sen

I was at a local store today and saw a product called Sen Sen. It looked sort of foreign and said confection sucrerie. It is a breath freshener from the mid 1890's and is supposed to be "perfume for your breath." It tastes like super strong licorice and like how ivory soap smells. It's actually much better than it sounds, someone said it was lavander and licorice. I just thought I would throw this out there, as it seems in the B&B gentlemanly spirit, of using older tech and exploring ways of the past.

According to the package:

Created in the mid 1890's. Sen-Sen "Throat Ease and Breath Perfume" is the first commercial breath freshener in the USA. Valuable to "Singers and Speakers", Sen-Sen's blend of licorice and rare herbs effectively mask odors from smoke, food or drink.

I am curious to hear if anyone has used this.

I used to love those! I haven't seen any around for years and I've looked. Do they still look like little pieces of licorice confetti?

Oh, yeah. A Navy chief knowledgeable in these things always carried them in case of emergency. His breath smelled of beer, Marlboro's and Sen-Sen. I bought some to try. Reminded me of TicTacs on steroids. Strong stuff.

My grandmother used to buy them. This would have been in the early 1950's when I was very young. I can't remember what they tasted like, though.

I remember them, but not fondly! I can't stand the taste of licorice and they are definitely the high-octane stuff.

I also remember them from granny's house in the 50's. Funny you should mention "breath perfume" because I remember them tasting like perfume. I don't remember a licorice taste, just the nasty perfume taste.

It's sort of a licorice and lillac taste, quite weird but addictive. They were around a dollar fifty per pack here, amazon had 12 packs. I guess somebody who likes lillac or lavender scented A.S. or soap could also scent their mouth.

I don't think it's lillac, The VEG for your mouth would not be good. It's got to be lavander.

LOL would you buy a product with the tag line: "It's like the VEG for your mouth?"

I started using these in the early 60's...real nice blast of perfumed licorice ,C.Howards Violets were great as well...You can still find sen-sen in some "old fashioned" candy stores..
