Brasso and vintage gillettes

I was trying to polish a Superspeed with Brasso...on the rag I saw some dark gray stuff...which I'm guessing is the plating coming off...however I think I may have smooth the actual brass out on the guard bar indentation, it feels smoother than the other guard bar...unless that is impossible to do. The plating is still intact I don't see any brass showing.

The gray stuff you saw was most likely tarnish or dirt coming off the razor. I have never known Brasso to remove plating. i have used it on razors, Army medals and car parts. it never hurt the finish.

Unless of course the plating is very pitted. then it could come off with brasso and a rag.

Brasso will absolutely remove plating,I guarantee it.

+1
VERY abrasive. The plating on those things isn't very thick, and it doesn't take a whole lot of elbow grease to wear through it.
Try something gentler, like Maas, or Blue Magic (available at your local auto parts store)

I use brasso on every razor i get. Gold was the only problem one. And as for that grey stuff no matter how much you polish it with that the cloth will always be grey. Polish until shiny and leave it

In Aviation Officer Candidate training and throughout my military career, I (as most) used Brasso to polish my brass belt buckles and tips. Others used it on their wings and other insignia. I can absolutely guarantee it will take off the lacquer and the metal. Nice way to get scratches out of brass. One squadron mate's wings lost quite a bit of definition from his use of Brasso. We used it specifically with the intention of removing lacquer and brass tarnish.

Generally speaking, the use of any kind of polish on a gold razor is not advised.

You really do need a very fine polish to use with the razors, as people have already mentioned.... And try to avoid polishing the gold plated razors.. I know first hand what will happen
Now I use toothpaste and a toothbrush and lightly scrub the gold razors, as they tend to have a very thin layer of plating

Gold razors Gillette says ether lighter fluid or finger nail polish.

Flitz contains no ammonia or abrasives and its for gold too.
Not that I'm pushing the sell of this stuff but I've never seen anything like it for cleaning metal to a bright color that's the bottom line and I've used just about all the different stuff out there.

How will Brass and a soft rag remove plating that is not badly pitted?

Brasso has abrasive powdered silica at 15% - 20% of total package volume. Silica is 6 -7 on the Mohs scale (1 - 10) of hardness. Nickel is 3.8. Silica is also used as the abrasive for some sandpapers.

Nevr Dull is primarily mineral spirits (paint thinner).

Also bear in mind that the wadding in Nevr Dull is also abrasive.
Nevr Dull and Brasso were designed to clean up scratches and polish brass.

Just stick with Maas, Blue Magic or Flitz, they all work great.

I'd be careful to check what's in the toothpaste you're using.
Some toothpastes contains alumina which is 3.4 on the Mohs scale. Gold is 2.5 - 3.

Some cheaper toothpastes and some imported ones (especially from China) still contain silica. I won't even use those on my teeth since tooth enamel is only 5 on the Mohs scale and silica can abrade enamel.

After I re-plate a razor to brighten up gold or nickle,I rub them lightly with baking soda and water. That's what is recommended on the label of plating solutions.
