Bragging on my 9-year old's art skills

Last week she had an entry in the city wide school art show. I was very proud but was disappointed (honestly) in the piece. She told me she didn't like it either and that it looks like it did because she screwed it up, but it was the teacher's choice, not hers.

So, I wont show you the pictures of that...but, last night the following came home and I need to brag because the kid has talent!

That's sweet dude! Seriously. And props to you for being a proud dad. Look, I don't know if your kid is going to be a great artist or not. It really doesn't matter.

The point is, whatever the kid decides to do, it's cool that you are so supportive. That is going to help them SO much. Let them lead the way in their interests and back them all the way. I wish more parents took such an interest in the cool things their kids did.

That is a pretty nice bird picture for a nine year old.

When I was her age, maybe a little older, I used to sit in the granary on my parent's farm and paint bird pictures. Woodpeckers were a favorite; your daughter has given you her interpretation of a red-bellied woodpecker, a real bird that does exist.

Encourage her... that's some advice I'll give you. I wasn't that great an artist, but I can't think of another time in my life when I lived in the present moment as much as I did when I was sitting in that farm building doing those paintings on scrap pieces of gypsum wallboard. A lot of good memories were brought back by seeing this painting!

Very Very nice! Your daughter is quite artistic for her age. What is the medium?
Sue

Its multi-media. The back ground is pastel. The branch is pencil drawn and and pastel colored. The Woodpecker is painted. I suspect parts of it are pencil drawn, but my daughter won't admit to it. I have seen her work freehand and it most often doesn't have the same precision that this work does.

We give her great encouragement in her art. She takes private art classes in a local studio. I am glad that her work inspired you, isn't that what art is supposed to do?
