Boy, did I do this wrong, lesson learned

As I was shaving today with my Feather AC, the shave was going quite well, when all of a sudden on my neck under the jaw line, Bam, a cut. After the blue cleared out of the air I proceeded to shave my chin area and wham, I nicked myself on the chin. This really ticked me off, as the chin nick bled quite a bit. I put the razor down and finished with my trusty 1904 DE. I couldn't for the life of me figure what I did wrong. After I was done with the shave, I had a few rough spots so I picked the Feather straight up again to do some water clean up.

Things went well here, and I realized what I had done wrong. As I was shaving in both of the cut area's I found that I had failed to adjust the blade angle for the changes in my skin surface. I just kept the razor moving in the same direction, S to N on the neck area without allowing for the curve of the skin as I neared the jaw line. On the chin I didn't change the angle as I shaved N to S from under the lip to the tip of the chin. Two very basic moves that I didn't do as the angle's on my face changed. Of course keeping a blade as sharp as the feather moving in the same direction as it was without allowing for the facial changes is going to result in what happened to me. Lesson very well learned.

A good point to remember, while the DE will self adjust for such changes, a straight definitely will not do the same thing. I've gotta remember to watch out for any changes in the road as I drive that thing.

As I said this was a lesson well learned, and a good point for any other newbie like myself who thinks, after a really short time with straights, that they're getting pretty good at it. :scared: :cursing: :001_unsur

Paul...trust me when I say it get's better the more you shave...and errr...the more you cut yourself :)

I did quite a number on my face before I started asking for some advice...and haven't looked back...have been shaving with the straight for a few weeks now and can't remember how long I cut myself worth mentioning....

I'm still healing a couple of cuts from learning the same lesson earlier this week. When you are new to straights, Neosporin is your friend. :001_tt2:

Ow! Hurts just to read what you did. No substitute for experience. Sometimes just have to get it the hard way.

Sometimes it takes a cut or two to really learn the curves of your face. Remember every cut- where, how, and why it happened, and in no time you will have it down, and cuts will be a rare occurance.
