Bowls?

I'm looking to get some better bowls for my soaps. I thought I would have time to turn some this summer, but it's not looking like I'll be able to before I ship off for school again. I just can't justify paying so much extra for the bowls produced by all the soapers I've seen.

So does anyone have any suggestions for decently priced soap bowls? Preferably with lids, and I'd like them to be pretty close in size to the pucks (I really hate the look of milled soap).

Let's start at the low end: ziploc XS (or any other 1-cup round plastic storage). Good enough for me, although I slightly prefer the rubbermaid version to the ziplocs.

I think the next step up would be the anchor hocking bowls? After that you're probably in fancy wooden bowl territory.

I guess I should be more specific. While the anchor hocking bowls are OK, I'm looking for something a little fancier. I'm willing to spend ~$8 - $10 on a bowl, depending on the quality (<8 for cheap looking pine, 10 for something a little more seductive). Hell, maybe I should just order some from Mama Bears, but then I'd inevitably end up with a bunch of soaps as well... And I just bought upwards of 6 pucks...

And holy crap. I wish I had searched the deals forum before I bought my puck of Tabac with a bowl for ~$20. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=161635

You can try Marshalls, TJ Max And Home Goods. In the section for the bathroom stuff you can sometimes find some very nice bowls with covers. Everything from stainless steel to stone at pretty good prices.

Hmm... I'll do that, thanks BTJR. There's a TJ Maxx right down the road from me. And I've been meaning to check out the local thrift/antique stores while I'm home. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks Rob and mblakele, I may yet end up with a mama bear bowl or anchor hocking.

That's an awesome suggestion, but the shipping would kill me. $5 for each bowl? I can't justify that.

I like the plastic bowls Mama Bear soaps come in. I've used up a few and re-used a couple. They stack and store nicely. There is nothing bad about ending up with a stack of Mama Bear soaps.

I like the plastic bowls, too, but I've got to USE that soap first. I'm about halfway through my first puck. Maybe I'll ask her if she can throw in a few extra tubs with my next order for a few bucks.

Hit the thrift stores. They might not have lids but you will find all sorts of nice bowls which are the right size and cheap.

Some examples...

Use Rubbermade or Tupperware avail. at your market. Last forever, unbreakable and come in nice small sizes with lids !!

A little more than you wanted to spend, but pretty cool I think:

Thanks Scott, that is pretty cool! I might just pick one up.

Legion, I'm definitely going to hit the thrift stores tomorrow. I'm not too hopeful, though. I think most bowls will be pretty close to the shapes you showed, which is OK, but I like to set some water on top of my pucks before use. With the sloped sides of those bowls, most of the water will run down the sides and to the bottom of the bowl unless I mill it (at least until my puck becomes concave from use).

John, those are pretty nice. You wouldn't happen to know the diameter, would you? Or about what size/brand of pucks they fit? If only they had a lid, I'd pick up a few right now.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I'm going to drive around town a bit tomorrow and see what I can find.

I figured that I'd point out that it's not $5 shipping for each bowl. It's $5.99 to ship your entire order, regardless of how many bowls are involved. Looks like orders over $50 get free shipping as well, so 8 bowls costs just under $52 shipped. Not a bad deal if you're buying in bulk.

Well damn. I didn't investigate that thoroughly. That may just be the solution I've been looking for. Thanks for pointing that out!

Mama Bears sells empty tubs for $1.80 a piece. I picked up a few extra ones with my first order from her. Go to the "Other Shaving Related Items" page. I think she has the wooden ones on there too.

I personally like the Anchor Hocking bowls because if you have multiple soaps and a largish rotation, they stack and store nicely in the linen closet. If you get fancy bowls or even thrift store goodies you may be missing out on the nice sealing top and the uniformity.
