Bowl or Face Scuttle?

All the recent threads about scuttles and the onset of cold weather made me to go to the Dirty Bird site. There I found a scuttle for those that bowl lather and another for those that face lather. Without going into the history of it, what I do is start with a damp brush, put a dab of cream on it, then spread the cream around in a bowl. I then dampen my face with water and commence to scrub it around my face. If I want/need more water, I run the tip of the brush quickly under the tap, continue to lather, set the brush down into the bowl, then commence to shave. I have never gotten straight whether I am bowl lathering or face lathering. What I don't do is develop mounds of lather in the bowl; when I do I end up with lather running off my face and down my chest. Am I face lathering? Am I bowl lathering? And why are there different scuttles for each? Thanks, John

youre kinda doing both.

the difference between them is in the size of the inner bowl. the face lathering one has a small bowl, because all its there to do is hold the brush when its not on your face. The bowl lathering one is bigger because you build your lather in that bowl.

Perhaps you might like to try skipping the bowl but of you routine and see how you like 'true' facelathering. Im not sure what benefits you gain from spreading the cream around in the bowl

Starting the cream in the bowl keeps the dab of cream from falling off my brush when I bring it up to my face. That's all. Many years ago, before I had a bowl, that's what would happen.
