After I whip up a reasonably thick lather, I swirl the loaded brush around my face followed by horizontal/vertical paintbrush strokes.

Probably because the Upward strokes are mostly ATG and raise the whiskers and hold them in the lather. So the are more "at attention" a ready to mowed down.Paint on then right before the razor use upward strokes. Seems to cover better. One of the great mysteries.
