What's new

Bought my first pipe this weekend!

I was able to sneak away this weekend to the ol' tobacco shop and pick me up a nice Savinelli. Not sure what model it was, but it looks quite similar to, according to my googling, a "Roma Sandblast Pipe - 616 Egg". It is also a standing model, which is nice, since now I don't have to buy a stand. :biggrin1:

The lady at the shop was quite helpful, and under her guidance, I selected an ounce each of two different blends. One of them is a nice Black Cavendish, and the other is a blend called "Tahiti" which smelled heavenly though I have yet to smoke it, and am not really sure what type of baccy is in it. After the baby went to sleep Saturday evening, I went outside and lit up with the Cavendish blend. My impressions were as follows:

1) Wow, packing this thing correctly is hard! (I have since read and re-read packing techniques).
2) Umm....how many times am I going to have to re-light?
3) Oooh, this tastes sweet!
4) Well, looks like the bowl is done, let me clean it out. Oh goodness...why is there all that unburnt tobacco hidden under there.

and when all was said and done:

5) Oh man...I actually smell better than I did before I lit up. Take that, cigarettes and cigars!

I also liked the sneaky little bit of nicotine that managed to get into my system despite the fact that I didn't inhale. :001_cool:

I made a ton of rookie mistakes, but I will learn and learn until the process is efficient. Also, pics to come soon.

Congrats on your new ADs. There are a many ways to pack tobacco, read up and learn what works best for you. Relighting isn't a big deal unless you are doing it over ten times a smoke, then there is an issue with how you packed it. Dottle is the leftover tobacco, basically the devil's share. Happy Smoking!

Sharing is Caring, and sharing AD's is doubly so!

I have been smoking my pipe about 4 months before I started wet shaving. To be honest the two almost fit together like tea and cookies. You start your day with a shower and a shave, you brew a cuppa and load your pipe, then carry on for the rest of your day... and hopefully a few more bowls!

I started pipe smoking because my cigar habit was getting out of control. Now I own a full stocked cellar of tobacco and several high end pipes. Frying pan to fire. Enjoy the ride though.

Big Tex,

I just got the Roma Sandblast Bent Dublin by Savinelli and completely share your enthusiasm for the pipe. As a new (again) pipe smoker, I am thoroughly enjoying re-awakening this hobby. My Roma smokes incredibly well and I hope yours does too (I've always found Savinelli to be a good product, though my data set is limited). Just be careful, pretty soon you'll be saying "$500 for a pipe isn't that bad." I recently had a fellow Marine buy me a pipe while he was on leave in the states (pipes are hard to come by here in Okinawa) and had to cap him at under $200. Best of luck and post the pics!
