What's new

Bought my first badger brush (pics)

Well I just started DE shaving a few weeks ago and started with a boar omega brush from a local drug store, then last week a friend sold me a muhle silvertip fiber brush which i really liked heads and shoulders above the boar brush. Then after some curiousity, I asked what else he had and he said he had a custom made 28mm beast in hand picked 2 band with not too much loft so I thought I'd give it a try. Here are some pictures, it's a beauty, so dense and soft. These pictures are from him, so I haven't got a chance to use it yet but I'll give her a run in the morning.

This is probably not a big deal to most of you but I wanted to share my excitement with someone who would actually "get it".

Looks like a bigger version of one of my Frank Shaving Finest Badger brushes. I think they are pretty darn good and can't be beat for the money.

Congrats on your brush! It looks good and it looks like it produces loads of lather. Maybe you can post the loft of that beast when you get it.

Is there a way I could find out? I don't have calipers. It created a good amount of bowl lather, i was worried about it maybe needing more product but it doesn't seem to want to put it ON my face as easily and thick as the muhle fiber does. it's weird, it created a bunch of lather but then when i lather it on my face it puts it on really thin so i end up kind of painting it on a bit right before i took a pass. maybe it's just because the real badger likes to suck it up within the brush more? i'll have to expirement some more, i definitely like it though, with the shorter loft it doesn't seem any bigger than using the 23mm silvertip fiber once it's splayed. seems like it might be good for head shaving if i ever end up starting to do that, too.

If you have rule simply butt the end to the rim of the brush, and either eye-ball it or bring something square to the tips of the brush and then read the rule. Best if you have metric rule; as most measurements related to knots are in millimeters. Also, I found with my bigger knots, more product. Let the big dog eat!!

It still produced a decent amount of lather in the bowl, but when i scrubbed my face with it it left a thin layer. When i scrub my face with the silvertip fiber it builds a nice thick yogurty/plastery layer and i dip the tips just lightly in water and go over it some more and it's slick and thick. With this brush the matter what i did it wouldn't put it on thick until i kind of slapped and painted it on, which i normally do regardless before i reach for the razor. regardless, i got my third day in a row of a nick-free shave which i wasn't doing prior to getting these better brushes. I swirl my muhle around the proraso for 20 circles and it seems like i could cut that in half or down to 15, but tomorrow i'll double that 20 up with the "fatty" and see how it differs. it's such a nice brush though.

I began with 22mm,i think helps you a lot to start rising the mm after experience
As for the Badger and the Proraso: excellent choice
Enjoy them, welcome to the traditional shaving world.

i've got a 24mm omega boar and a 23mm muhle silvertip fiber as well. the silvertip fiber is the easiest for me to use for sure. i think maybe the badger was holding more water than i thought after i shaked it out so it left me with a light/foamy lather that left me with one sore face.
