What's new

Bought a razor and I'm curious what year it might be thinking in the 50's

The most unusual thing is the head doesn't sit at 90 degrees it's tilted. It is marked Made in England and Patient Pending. PS. (Guy with black bakerlite one and dark metal it's most likely WW11 so it doesn't reflect light and its a simple design that could pack into a small box. Plastics started about 50-60's.) Like the way oven cleaner cleaned it up?

1949- early 1950's this one being Patient Pending would that mean it's one of the first in this design? This one feels like it's stainless its got the weight. Handle is steel and top could be chrome plated brass but don't see brass from ware?

These would have also most likely been made from left over materials from WW11. Like the tricycles made from landrover springs and tank parts they were awsome had one when I was a kid.

These two I would assume 70's or 80's the Dark one has been my razor until recently and just can't remember if I had a metal handle shaver before this one or not. 67 now so had it many years.

That be the English Gillette Rocket with the aluminium handle.

They were made from 1953 to about 1954. They seem more short lived than the heavier all brass Rocket, sometimes referred to as the HD or heavy duty. It should come in at 57gm. The HD Rocket is somewhat heavier at 70gm.
Here is a mint specimen from Mr Razor's wonderful site.

The Patent Pending dates it quite well. This was from about 1950 to about 1954 when it was granted patent no 694 093. This was basically to cover the centre bar notch for the new blade despensers.

Heres mine still being a great razor!

I'm unsure what damage there is to yours. Have you shaved with it yet?

It's one of my favourite TTO's with a lovely smooth mechanism.

Never seen one in Aluminium. Nice. I have the HD version in all brass and I agree, fantastic shaver. Got it years ago for cheap and consider it one of my best razors.

I have one of the 1949 63g English Rockets.
Mine is also bent at pretty much the same angle as kombivan's. Mr. Razor's photos show a non bent razor so I'm guessing the tilt shouldn't be there. I haven't tried bending it back for fear of breaking it but if anyone knows if it can be done and what's the best way to do it I'd sure appreciate knowing.

Umm, bend it back? Haha.

Towel around the head should give you more grip!

75kg it weighs in at and I did bend it back straight and it shaves well one side a bit more blade than the other slightly. Pretty square now. I just bent it back by hand couldn't even feel it bend back just kept checking after each attempt This one is solid I thought stainless never suspected brass. alloy will break if not done properly as it springs back and does weird stuff straightened a few alloy bull bars. The trick is to flex it into place then a second person gives it a tap while your holding it where you want the bend to be to correct it.

Well, I tried bending it back. Nothing moved at all until the head just snapped right off. Oh well. At least it only cost me one dollar.

I needed to try something though. I couldn't bring myself to use a crooked razor so...
They still work good crooked. Could even assist with the cutting like a grader blade.

+1! The only ‘problem’ with Mr. Razor is that the site makes me drool!! :a29::a29:

Your mission, should you accept it, for a chance in going into the chance draw for a space ex rocket trip of a lifetime is to pick the Aloominum one of the three?

Note:- The chance of being drawn to go into the chance draw is about as much chance as I have of actually supplying the winning chance prize.

So, ....

As you may see, there is no difference ... Only the very astute trained eye will discern the correct one. :p

The only difference .... some Noddy put writing on that one to indicate the "patented bending" area of concern.
Brass crimped against brass VS Aloominum against aloominum ... and the loser will be Aloominum!!

How did Mr G for Gillette do it in the first place? Black Magic? Voodoo Ritual? Harry Potter wand?
How to tighten that after an unfortunate bend or snap crackle pop? Minimal effort and great difficulty!

Well it turns out Mr Wombat ESQ of Rock-Ridge Right Side Half way up Gods Country of Au decided he would give the ugly brass one a bath in Toxic Liquid!

Being now nice and clean, Mr Wombat ESQ discovered that its base plate was wobbling under the enormous load of a cotton cloth. :( PANIC, it's the ugly brass one, the aluminium one is rock solid! How the cheeses am I goin to tighten that?

Light bulb illuminates at a full 100 watts, Bingo! I bought me one them center punch thingies a while ago, them ones that you just push down and the spring/hammer/anvil inside do the work.
Freakin easy as brew, minimal effort, and about as difficult as tripping on your own shadow, just went to each of the three divots per side in staggered order, popped them and Bobs ya Aunty. Job done :D
