Bottle Cap Revisited

Some time ago I took a bottle cap and converted it into a shaving brush with a TGN 23 mm nylon synthetic knot. That information can be seen below.

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/306533-Bottle-Cap-Brush-Project?highlight=bottle+cap

It used one of the older TGN knots and it was looking a little run down compared to what the new TGN knots could offer. So I decided to replace the old style 23 mm with a new style 22 mm.

Here is the revised bottle cap brush.

The flair is smaller on this brush, not only making it more proportional with the handle, but also makes the knot more dense at the tips which improves overall performance.

I honestly think it looks better than before. Those new synthetic knots at TGN do look a lot nicer than the old knots like the one you had in the last one. Have you used it yet? It looks like it would have a bit more backbone to it, but of course looks can be decieving.

Tyler,
I have used it and it is improved. The newer knots have less of a flair than the older knots which places the fibers in the center. That allows for slightly more backbone, but also more surface action which allows the tips to come in contact with each other and the skin more. I like the new TGN knots and they are a really good knot made from 3rd generation synthetic fiber. They are not Muhle refined or H.I.S., which use the 4th generation of synthetic fiber, but they are good and I have several for projects later on down the road.

How do these compare to the badger knots that are available at TGN? I don't have any personal reasons to not use badger or boar but the synthetic knots do interest me. Could you maybe compare to two?

I like it GD, great way to re-use something you did not like and now do. If anyone is curious the cap looks like it came from a bottle of English Leather.

They have different performance characteristics.

The synthetics have thicker fibers so you can use circular motion to you hearts content.

The synthetics handle water differently so you have to eliminate soaking and simply dip the brush in water and gently release the water before putting in the soap or cream.

You can use a lot of hot water on a synthetic (very hot water is fine) because they will not degrade like naturals will.

They dry faster than naturals because they do not retain water.

These are a 3rd generation synthetic which is very good. The new Muhle refined fiber (Ver 2) and the H.I.S. brush fiber are 4th generation fibers which are even better than this one.

I hope that helps.

That does help quite a bit actually. The quick drying was the main reason I had thought about them before. For a travel brush of course. I think you may have me convinced. We'll have to see when I make my next order at TGN.

Be careful, they may want to take more of a place in your den than just a travel brush! :cool1:

Haha, I am prepared! I don't have a lot of really specific preferences and like having the variety in my den. So if it ends up in more than one brush then so be it!! I need more brushes anyways...(stupid SBAD)

I have a red and black ever ready on the way and I was thinking of getting a synthetic knot to try as I have badger and boars.
