Today I was at a locally owned sharpening shop. I usually buy my father his Pinaud products from there. I bought some J.M. Fraser's and Booster's lime there about 2 years ago. They don't get a lot of love, but I use them occasionally. I had seen the polar ice there about a dozen times, but never took a chance to try it out. Well, something in my head said "Just crack it open and see if you like the scent". My word. This stuff smells wonderful. And at $7.50, it was hard not to try it out. I didn't even realize until moments ago that this comes in a 400 ml bottle (or 14 oz for my American Brothers). So, I bought 2 bottles. 1 for myself and 1 for my Dad as well. I have yet to try this out, but what I can tell you is that it does not smell like AV Blue Ice. AV has more of a crisp scent, kind of a sharp-burn my nose for a second kind of smell. Not a bad scent at all. Where booster's has more of a fresh, just had my hair cut, sort of powdery, but smell more like your Dad when he and your mom were heading out for the night, while you sat home with you older brother- kind of scent. (You know the one.)
Some of you might think these descriptions are odd, and true as that may be...but some of you know exactly what I am talking about.
"Booster's Polar ice. Smells like your father on an important night when you're stuck at home with your older brother"
I find Polar Ice much less potent than AV Blue. Not all that similar in scent, either, and I agree with the mention of some powdery elements. To tell the truth, the closest scent I have come across is a fresh Valobra stick.
I love my Booster's Polar Ice. But, it has only the smallest amount of menthol cooling action on my mug. No where near as much as AV blue for example. I actually solved the problem by adding some menthol crystals.
As to the scent, well i just love it. It is hard to describe though. As others have mentioned, it is definitely barbershop powdery. And I will say it is in the same ballpark as AV or Floid Blue (I have both). However, it is much less sharp, a good bit sweeter and more mellow than AV. Also, the fragrance seems to be gone in about 30 seconds. AV and Floid Blue have much more longevity. Floid Blue smells much more like a high end, concentrated cologne. A fair comparison might be to say that this smells like floid blue with about a gallon of water added to it...lol!
Just as a side note too. Some 444 with this AS will give you more of that cooling sensation you're after. I can't be sure, but I think Booster called this one "Polar Ice" just based on the color.
