Bookmarks Display Problem in Firefox

Afternoon gents. I have a small problem with my Firefox bookmarks. It is how some of my sub menus display. I have a folder in bookmarks called "Todd's Bookmarks". In that folder there are sub menu folders for different categories. Mens Grooming, Electronics, etc. These folders contain the bookmarks for each subject. Usually, navigating to these folders creates a little cascade of sub folders followed by a large cascade of the actual links by name. However, some of my links folders only display a page symbol and the first two letters of the link. This is not universal and seems to apply to the folders with the most links. I cannot figure out how to change the way this displays. If it is even possible. At first I thought it must be because they contained so many links but this wasn't an issue till recently. To be honest, I have been less than thrilled with the whole FF3 experience. Too many little aggravating issues like this. Can someone offer up an idea? It is probably something simple that I am overlooking. BTW, I have used FF3 for about six months and this problem only showed up recently. This aggravation along with the supposedly "awesome bar" are just about enough to put me off this browser till they get it straightened out.

Regards, Todd

I also notice a few oddities with the latest release of Firefox. I am on 3.5.2.

There is a new version of Opera that came out, last week. I have been trying it and it seems pretty neat. I am not giving it my unqualified recommendation, yet, but I would definitely recommend giving it a tryout.

So the page icon is just a generic icon when the site does not have the favicon set -- that's the little badger next to the http part in the address bar. So that guy being there isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Then the issue is that some of your bookmarks are just displaying two characters of the page title? Is it the same bookmarks all the time? Does it come and go? Can you give an example of a link or two that are having troubles? Can you take a screenshot to show us? Maybe right click on one of them, hit properties, and show us a screenshot of that?

Okay Perry. I think this is what you need. It is a screen shot of my bookmark menus opened to "mens grooming". As you can see, all the link titles show only two characters(and whatever the icon deal to the left of them are called). This is aggravating. As you can see, if you scroll over the link, it pops up the name but I would rather just scroll down list being able to see the entire name. Not all my folders display this way. Only the ones with a lot of links. However this seems odd to me since the other folders have names just as long if not longer for the links. Can I fix this?

It may just a matter of too many levels of hierarchy involved with all of those folders that you are using to organize the bookmarks. You can get rid of one of them, which is the Bookmarks folder, it is just a level that isn't needed. Just drag the seven folders in the Bookmarks out and drop them under the Bookmarks folder. Then see if menu displays correctly.

You could even eliminate the Todd's Links folder if you wish. As you have it now, you have to go through 4 sub menus to get to a link. You really should hit links on the first or second menu.

Right now your path is Menu/Bookmarks/Bookmarks/Todd's Links/Men's Grooming/<link>

Good Grief! Make it Menu/Bookmarks/Todd's Links/Men's Grooming/<link>

Well JP, could you just say what you really mean? LOL. I hear you. I find most of the bookmarking tedious at best. Your suggestions sound good to me. There were even more folders in there when I first installed FF3. I will tell you, the more I use it, the more I become aggravated with it. If not for the bloated way Opera loads RSS feeds I would change over to it and just be done. However, I like the way FF does RSS with its bookmarks toolbar folder. You just get a short title of the feed and click it to go there rather than downloading a TON of messages like Opera does.

That's interesting as I have the same kind of menus and sub-menus but don't have the problem. As mentionned, if you can move your bookmarks one step higher, it might help, otherwise, FF forums might be best.

Well chaps, I completely revamped the bookmarks to clean it up. The cascade is smaller now and a lot of the excess folders in the main menu are gone. Same problem. It is odd since this only effects some of the sub menus, not all.

If you go in Bookmarks/Organise bookmarks, do you see the same problem?

Hi Luc. No, the problem does not seem to show up in the "organise bookmarks" window. Really strange. I never knew how aggravating something as seemingly innocuous as shortened hyperlink names could be. You have to scroll over each one to have the little pop up identifier show you what they are. Just maddening.

if you see the whole name in the 'organise bookmarks' feature, then, you have the full name and not 3-4 letters only.

Mmm, How about if you backup your bookmarks, move the structure back to 1 where it's short, see if it's still reduced? After that, I would try to delete the bookmarks completely and then re-import them, see what happens.

I had a problem with my bookmark displays and learned that there are a number of program problems with the function. There is a forum linked to the help function where you can post what you're experiencing, then view the responses. I have upgraded since then and the problem still exists.

Hey chaps. I thought I would pass along some more information. I had just let FF update less than two weeks ago. Probably closer to a week and a half. That was version 3.5.2. Well, last night I turned on the old pc and it pops up a "firefox has updated" sort of message. It is now 3.5.3. Hmmm. So I go to my bookmarks and voila! They appear as normal now. Strange. There had to be some serious bugs to get a minor revision that fast. Whatever happened, whether it was the FF update or the newer version of Avira antivirus I installed, the problem seems to have been sol-ved as Inspector Clouseau would say. I just hope it is permanent. Now if I could just get the ruddy RSS links to update by themselves for Badger and Blade. I will tell you I loved FF 2.xx but this one...not so much.
