I am planning to order a Bull Mastiff handle with a Gillette Old Type head. I think the old type looks really gorgeous, but I read a review where it states that it is difficult to use, if not incompatible, with modern razor blades. is this true? should i be going for the new type open comb instead of the old type open comb?

someone persuade me one way or another. (what do you guys figure is the best head that bob uses for the mastiff handle?)

I don't own a bull mastiff but I find the blade incompatibility issue to be unlikely, otherwise you wouldn't have so many satisfied users from the forum using it

I really like the old type but the new short comb is also very nice and easier to use. I would say think open comb tech if that makes sense. I have both types and I also have re plated ones with handles from Bob.

I love old types. Strange people say they're hard to use, they've been among the easiest for me.

I use red pack Personnas in mine. No problem. Really like the razor, use it almost all the time since I got it.

I have shaved with my Old Type a few times, and have had no issue whatsoever using a standard DE blade with it.

Some people think a shim is required, as the DE blades of this era were thicker than our modern counterparts, but I didn't find this to be the case. This would only be an issue if your razor doesn't tighten down fully without the shim inserted.

Note too, that by rights, without the shim the razor should be less aggressive than when originally designed, as the blade gap will be less.
