I have face-lathered everything from a “floppy” Vulfix 22mm badger to an Omega 48 boar. Scritchy, prickly hair is the only problem I have encountered with any brush along the way. If you learn to use a tool, it will work for you.
My preference at the moment is for a small boar or a mixed badger/boar, but six months from now I might fall in love with big pro boars or synthetics again.
I can say that over the last decade-plus, the trend for my preferences seems to be circling back around to a 22-26mm brush with a loft around 50mm and always,of course, no scritchy.
