BOAR BRUSH Q&A....suggestions please

Hey guys,
I own 1 brush, a VDH deluxe..I like it, and it seems to keep getting better with every use.

Now here is my thinking, Im sure I could go nuts, and purchase something in the way of a brush, that would cost 100.00 and up, well maybe one day but until then......

In thinking of purchasing the VDH shave kit that walmart sells,
1. the extra nice mug.
2. I like the VDH deluxe soap,
3. Heck in price you almost get the mug free.....

Do you guys keep several brushes, to go with several soaps that are in your rotation??
My thinking is maybe I get 3 total, so I can used 3 different type soaps, without cross contaminating a new puk of soap with the last soaps, scent and or properties.......
Does this make sense, to you guys????
The VDH brushes are all I can get locally, at their price,I cant find anything online that would compare to the VDH Boar brush, in price nor quality
(correct me if ya got a link...etc),please gimme any advise you guys have.......thanks....Russell

I have three brushes in my current rotation: A Rooney 3/1 super silvertip, a Semogue 1305, and a Boreal 976. I use them interchangeably on my soaps. They all work well -- I just like to mix it up a little. It's the same reason I have so many different soaps.

Three brushes here too:

1. Vintage Vulfix Hyde Park Boar
2. Omega 21047 Boar/Badger Mix
3. Reknotted Vintage Kent KS7 with TGN Finest 20mm

I just rotate through the brushes and use whatever feels "right" that morning.

They all feel slightly different on the face and need slightly different prep/time on the puck/face ( face latherer) ...

Not worried about "cross contamination".....

So mine are more about different brushes, than different soaps/creams

Use 99.99999% soap, and not an issue with any of the above.

Ha! DSB, my brushes are a Rooney 1/2 Super, a Semogue 1305, a Boreal 976 and my Grandfather's RubberSet with a Golden Nib knot.

In response to the OP, I've not experienced any problem using more than one soap with a given brush. Most of the people that I know who have used the VDH Deluxe say that it is a fine brush that tends to begin shedding after a while. There's no real need to spend $100 on a brush (although, the Rooney that I have is worth every penny). Check out www.shoeboxshaveshop.com. He has LOTS of boar brushes to choose from.

Also, the Semogue 1305 is an excellent boar brush. It is stocked by Vintage Scent.

Good luck.

The van der Hagen boar brush isn't that bad. It just needs to be broken in. I disected mine original one, but later replaced it since I missed it. After some use the tips get super soft and it offers up excellent lathering via the face (both creams and soaps).

Thanks for this reply, my thinking is for the price, ya can't go wrong, availability will allow me to purchase 2 more.
Probably, 2 VDH Deluxe sets........
Seeing that I get a mug,with a brush holder,a puk,and a new brush for a whopping $8.97 US.......available within 8 miles from my home:wink:
.....thanks guys.....Russell

I just tossed a VDH boar in the trash tonight sick of boar hair everywhere, I got a Semogue 620 on the way. I usually just use my Rooney badger for everything. soaps, creams it works for everything.

But anyway , I would just run over to shoeboxshaveshop, plenty of boars for around 10-15 bucks. Much better quality than the VDH.

If you want to switch to badger penworks.us has brushes starting at $30

My vdh boars only shed a little when new, then they stopped. Even my Semogue 1305 shed a bit when new. Who really cares though when the vdh brush is less than $10 new?

Honestly though, every badger brush I have ever owned (except my Kent B&B LE 08) shed far more than my boar brushes. I have had a couple serious issues badger brushes, where the hair kept falling out. Both needed to be replaced (Kent replaced the whole brush, Shavemac replaced the knot). I have never had this type of problem with a boar brush.

I'm glad you like boar brushes. Very solid performers and wonderful with soaps. You should consider splurging 10-30 bucks on an Omega/Boreal/Semegue boar brush. They will make you very happy.

Hey Russell I know you're a member of the Value Minded Shavers, and I got one value for you!

The Omega Professional boar found here is $11.07 shipped....

It preforms 10x better than a VDH boar, by far...it also seems to do a decent job on creams too, I used it with C.O. Bigelow (Proraso) and got a fine lather out of it.

I really don't think this brush can be beat, I have had mine for over a month, and its maybe shed a hair a week, if that.

The Omega boars are good.

The Semogue boars are grand.

If you have a Body Shop, they sell a synthetic for about $11.

I haven't used the VDH brush so don't know much about them. Semogue is my go to brush. Wife took my Omega.

The Body Shop brushes are TINY like itty-bitty though.

btw +1 for Semogue man I want a 620!

Very cool link, man....
thanks, that kinda $ difference makes sense, and worth the try...thanks:blushing:
Ill use that company to get a few things for my first online order, and add the Omega brush to my list.......thanks....RP

Burma-Shave's another inexpensive option. Mine's 3 months old and has broken in nicely.

My rationale for a two brush rotation is simply to give each brush a day to fully dry out between uses.
