Breaking news that Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar wrote a homophobic slur onto his eye-black stickers for Saturday's game against the Bosox. He always came off as an arrogant tool, in my opinion. He's having a crap year, too. Just the excuse they need to drop this flake. He didn't play on Sunday due to "back problems." Jays are officially looking into the matter. Certainly not making excuses for this idiot, but unfortunately homophobia isn't such a big deal in Latin American culture.

"Tu ere maricon" translates to "You are a faggot". Nice.

I'd like to say, and spanish is my first language, that this may not be a homophobic slur. If you spoke (Caribbean) Spanish you'd know this is either someone playing a joke on him (so when he looks on the mirror he reads it for himself) or something directed at someone in specific (a friend maybe?) If it was something along the lines of "odio maricones" (I hate fa***ts) then that'd definitely be homophobic slur.

Also, we, Caribbean ppl, throw the word "maricon" around like "damn." So it might be just a lost in translation type thing and along with the way our media and internet works, it doesn't surprise me that they might blowing this out of proportion.

I don't like this guy either (I think he's arrogant too) but I think you should omit the "Cuban" from "Cuban idiot" just so there's no more misunderstandings, lol.

Oh, forgot to say that "maricon" doesn't really mean "fa***" it means gay. There's another word for "fa***" and it's a very ugly word we don't throw around like "damn."

Only reason I included "Cuban" was to identify him as Latin American, which was germane to the rest of that sentence's meaning. I think it is apparent. If it isn't, it is now. But I can see how someone might get the wrong idea. Now that'd be ironic--a biggot posting about a biggot. That unfortunately happens a lot, though.

I've always been a fan of his game...though I often wonder why he can't just play regularly? He has to make even an easy play defensively look as if he completed a highlight reel play. Same after he hits a HR, it's as if he hit it in the World Series.

I'm not Hispanic so that was definitely informative to get a take on how it might be misinterpreted. Everyone is going crazy over it here and it's just weird because I bet those same people use the same slurs in their everyday lives unfortunately. Anyways, lets see what comes out of it.

Hec is the real deal as SS. im a big Yunel fan although he is struggling this year. Last year he batted for avg and was sound defensively , if has any trade value though id be moving him

Yeah, it's easy to jump the gun on stuff like this. Let's wait and see what's what. There's gonna be an official press conference with Escobar, Anthopoulis (GM), and Farrell (Manager) before their game with the Yanks Tuesday night. Suppose I shouldn't condemn him before I hear his explanation. But regarding the stuff I'm hearing about it maybe being a joke or prank pulled on him, like he didn't know those words were written there!?! C'mon.

+1. I know some gay fellows from the Caribbean who use the term often. One fellow from Nicaragua refers to his lover that way but in an affectionate manner.

I am thankful to read the comments in this thread that put a little more cultural context onto the phrase in question. We don't get any of that from the news media.

Frankly, I don't watch, follow, or care about baseball, but obviously I sympathise with those who dislike homophobes being in positions of prominence in professional sports (or elsewhere). The Bluejay know, one assumes, that they have to do damage control on this, or their public image will suffer, along with ticket sales and advertising revenues.

I wonder how they'll play this one.

How dumb do you have to be to think that doing something like that would go over well? I mean, was he back there in the locker room, pen in hand, ready to write on his eye patches, thinking to himself, "Man, this is gonna be GREAT! People are gonna LOVE this!"

I'm more offended by how stupid he is than the comment itself.

Suspended 3 games without pay and part of the money goes to GLAAD and You Can Play organizations.

Well, apparently he has nothing against homosexuals, afterall, his interior decorator and hairstylist are both gay. Oh yeah, and he has gay friends, too. I'm not making this up. He actually said these things to a room full of international press. Like many of you guys, I'm more aghast at his stipidity than anything else. I've decided I'm not here to weigh in on any of the moral and ethical implications surrounding this circus and its clown, just to chuckle and shake my head... and hope he's wearing an Oakland A's uniforn next season.
