Blocking Youtube in Russia.

Jokes aside. It's sad, because all this is being done to fill russians' heads with propaganda even more. Cause and effect, man.

War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength
I was born and live in Russia. That's who I remember: Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko, Gorbachev, Yeltsin. And finally, the immortal Putin.

Here is the official version of Youtube's slowdown. The malfunction of YouTube, which was observed throughout Russia on Thursday night, is related to the activities of the platform itself. This statement was made by the head of the IT Committee of the State Duma, Alexander Khinshtein. The parliamentarian believes that the projected slowdown in the speed of downloading videos on the resource to 70% is due to the fact that Google has stopped servicing its equipment in Russia. - I talked about this earlier, and the development of events confirms this forecast. Due to problems primarily related to the work of YouTube itself and the Google corporation banned in Russia, serious problems arise with video playback. The download speed will drop to 70%, and this is due to the actions of YouTube itself, which has stopped investing in its systems located here for two years since the beginning of its work. And since the main content that Russian users watch is stored here on servers owned by Google, they require constant maintenance and updates," Alexander Khinshtein commented on the interruptions in the service. The head of the IT committee added that Google supported sanctions against the Russian Federation and thereby deprived itself of the opportunity to legally pay for hosting servers inside the country. - Google has bankrupted its Russian "daughter", - said the deputy. Experts in the segment of Russian Internet service providers explained to MK that YouTube content traffic in Russia really goes mainly through servers installed on the sites of domestic telecom operators and Data centers. They form part of the Google Global Cash system. The point is that videos are ranked according to the principle of popularity in a particular location. The content that is most popular with Russian users is uploaded to servers in the Russian Federation. Thus, the viewer actually watches the video from his local network, without contacting a server abroad. This ensures maximum download speed. After the sanctions were imposed, Google really stopped paying Russian telecom operators to rent places to host servers. He also stopped servicing the equipment, which he had previously done regularly. However, the providers did not remove the servers of the American corporation, since they are firmly embedded in the work of Russian communication services. -Google servers are integrated into the network and are part of the service. If you remove them, the subscribers' speed will drop. When you try to download a particular content, the request will no longer be sent to a local server, but to a foreign one. Deterioration of the quality and speed of the Internet will automatically lead to a wave of discontent. Moreover, users will complain not about Google, but about their provider. As for the failure of equipment due to lack of updating and maintenance, this is partly true. Sooner or later, individual hard drives on any server stop working. But in order for YouTube to "crash" across the country at the same time, all hard drives on all servers had to fail at the same time. It's hard to imagine, because initially Google duplicated the hardware to ensure the smooth operation of its services. That is, each provider has such servers at least at two points. It is also difficult to imagine the lack of electricity in all server rooms across the country at the same time," explained the source of MK.

perhaps just BS from your government.
can't imagine why YT would slow down so precipitously if it was due to sanctions that have been in place for many months.
that logic would also slow all google searches...is this happening??
good luck to you & yours!

The problem for the residents of Russia is as follows. There is a lot of useful information posted on Youtube. It's not just shaving videos or music. But also useful tips for all occasions that have been accumulating for years.

I want to supplement the previous post. In Russia, the government proposes to replace Youtube with a Russian equivalent. But this is not a good idea. This is the same as trying to replace Windows with a Russian operating system.

Hopefully my three year old will get off the Vlad and Nikki channel now. He will be speaking fluent Russian soon. No matter what I do he keeps finding his way back to it. God only knows what ideas they are filling his head with.

I would like to continue discussing YouTube's work in Russia. On my laptop, I can only watch YouTube videos via VPN, while the video quality is very low. This may mean that the Russian authorities are trying to force YouTube users to switch to Russian analogues of this platform. I would like to quote an excerpt from an article published on one of the Russian profile sites: "YouTube, which used to work at a loss, now brings Google money thanks to the advertising that users from Russia see. Because of this, even some foreign agents using foreign AdSense are starting to receive advertising revenue. Russian bloggers who cannot get monetization outside of Russia have lost it. Google has completely stopped contextual advertising for authors from Russia, as the quality of advertising has decreased. It is unlikely that Polish advertising will be of interest to a Russian using a Polish VPN, and for Google this has a negative impact on performance. Citizens are actively installing VPNs, it seems that even after Instagram was blocked, there was no such surge. The massive use of VPNs can really jeopardize the data of some citizens who are not willing to pay for a high-quality service, but they have no choice, and they are not going to give up YouTube. The state budget can lose a lot of money in the form of taxes that bloggers brought in. There are no such revenues expected on Russian sites as on YouTube. And there are also many other problems that have already arisen or may arise in the future."

Hello everyone. I want to continue the topic of blocking websites in Russia. Yesterday I couldn't log into the Russian shaving forum for a reason I don't understand. I had to use a VPN. In Russia, there is a Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications (Roskomnadzor). This organization has recently been actively engaged in blocking a lot of unfriendly " sites. Although, I don't understand what a forum for shaving enthusiasts has to do with it. And I wanted to ask if there is such a strict system in other countries for blocking sites that the government does not like?
