Blades!

so i have been using a DE for over a year now. I have always used personna blades that i bought when i first picked up my DE, at the time i also purchased some derby extras as well. I tryed them both, and found that the personnas were easy to shave with and didnt mess my face up like the derby extras.

So i put the derbys in the back of the pile and ran through all my stock of personas.

Yesterday i went to shave, and didnt have any more personas left. So i tossed in a derby extra. WOW! What a great shave i had! It cut through the hair like butter, WAY easyer than the personas! With NO irritation! Like a hot knife though butter!

So this got me thinking, im guess that when i first started shaving these derbys where to sharp for me. That why i liked the personas. I most likely had bad technique and that is why i didnt like them.

Now that i had perfected my technique and like the derbys, can anyone recommend other good blades? Maybe feathers?

In the good blades that I tried and worthy: Feather, Kai, Astra Superior Platinum, Crystal, Gillette Bleue Extra, Supermax, Dorco ST-301.

Strictly my opinion, and I'm sure others will disagree with me. The feathers shave slightly better than the derby for me, but I only get 2 good shaves out of either one, so the higher price of the feather blade eliminates it for me. I'll stick with the derby @ $24.99 per 200.

Two things changed from the first evaluation of the Derby blade and the second. One, a year later, your technique with YOUR razor and knowledge of how to shave YOUR whiskers are much more mature. Also, you may be making much better lather now - but that's just a guess. So, comparing your Derby shaves a year apart is actually showing that your technique and other things have improved because the Derby blades are the same. I think the Feather gives me the closest shave, but I can't shave with them every time because my skin can't take it. I alternate with Israeli Crystals (from WestCoastShaving), which shave me very close - and take a little more work - because they are just so much easier on my skin. Like others suggested, get a sampler pack, and I think you will find there are several blades that will work really well for you.

There seems to be two types of shavers in this forum; those who can use the ultra-sharp blades, and those who can't. I happen to be one of the ones who can't use them, so my favorite blade is the Personna reds. They give me a close, comfortable shave every time so I really have no need to go to anything else. I guess if you can use the Derbys and Feathers without turning your face into hamburger, go for it.

I've been DE shaving for 4+ years... Derby's have been my go-to blades. I recently tried Kais and they are also great. My razor of choice right now is a superspeed (redtip or '40's style) and the Kai works great in these. They haven't displaced Derby's, but they are every bit as good, at the least.

BTW: Though it's been a little while since last using them, I never got along with Feathers very well.
