Blades for GEM?

So after various DE jaunts I've dusted off my GEM and bought a pack of blades at walgreens (GEM branded, stainless I believe). Love how this thing shaves. Only problem: the blades are kind of pricey. Are there any better deals to be had on blades? Are there any other brands to look for? I think I remember some people suggesting a scientific supply place's blades, but you had to buy 200 of them

I used the Walgreens for about a year, then I got the ones at CVS. They are carbon steel. I will not go back to stainless, even though I got 7 instead of 5 shaves out of them. The carbon steel is like a hot knife through butter.

I too am a LOSER (Lover of Single Edge Razors)! Ted Pella is the place to get blades. http://www.tedpella.com/dissect_html/dissect.htm#anchor1606431 Product 121-E
That was the place I remember! Unfortunately I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit to 200 blades...
Several vendors that support B&B sell SE blades

Here is one

They have the same ones I get at walgreens. After shipping it wouldn't be worth it
Somebody mentioned Connaughts on the SE forum. Even after shipping it was still cheaper than Pella I think.
After the exchange rate I think Pella would be much cheaper, let alone postage. Might be the only way to try a small number, but if I'm in for $10 for 10 blades I might as well go $40 for 200

thanks for the help so far!

Question...prolly gonna be redundant but I am confused and maybe ignorant lol.

But..aren't these the same kinda blades I used to use for my paint scrapers and box/carpet cutters?

I never imagined shaving with these things, just curious is all no offense intended I just can't get my head wrapped around it. lol

Same style of blade yes. I wouldn't use any old single edge blade I found in a hardware store, but some marked for "industrial use" like the Ted Pellas are reported to work well for shaving at least for some people.

Others like ones that can be found at Walgreens and CVS are made specifically for shaving, but it's the same shape and there's probably little difference in how they're manufactured

Different grind on the edge.

Scraper blades are ground to stay cutting sharp under hard and adverse use

Shaving blades are ground finer to cut whiskers so the grind is not the same as a scraper blade

You can use a shaving blade in a scraper but it will only stay sharp for a few passes before the edge rolls

You can use a scraper blade in a razor but you will take it out after a second or less (been there, done that, not curious any longer).

Single Edge razors are the best kept secret. They offer a really close shave and blades last longer than a DE. Give it a try, you might like it!

I'm reading some horror stories about the Pella blades...
I think I'm gonna visit CVS after Christmas and see if they have the CVS branded Treet blades (which are plain carbon steel rather than stainless) and see if those work. They are ever so slightly cheaper, but the may corrode quickly.

Would keeping the razor in a jar of barbicide prevent corrosion? I could just leave the whole thing in it between shaves

Never leave anything in barbicide longer than 10 minutes.

Removing the blade and patting it dry is much better.

If you feel you must leave the blade in, dip the head in alcohol to dissipate/replace any water that is in the razor head and on the blade. Don't leave it in, just dunk it remove it, and let the alcohol evaporate naturally. The alcohol will evaporate leaving the blade clean and free of moisture

Alcohol it is then! Thanks for the tip. I'll have to get a little container to use.

A small glass jar with a tight fitting lid works great. I keep one in my shave den and use a cotton ball dipped in alcohol to wipe down my straights after I use them to make sure all the water is off before oiling them and putting them away

Well now. Some of us vastly prefer the PTFE coated Pellas and think the carbons are as useful as the aforementioned pain screr.
YMMV. Try carbons and stainless in the small packs before committing to one type.
