Blades for CJB - please help

Hello everyone,
I just ordered a new CJB, off one of the popular auction sites, this morning and it should arrive this Friday. I'm excited to give it a try as this will be my first attempt beyond using a safety razor. Unfortunately it does not come with any blades. I'm looking for any overall advice as well as recomendations toward a first blade for this. If you have a moment I'd appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you - David

I think Feather has the Pro-guard, which seems to be loved and hated in equal measure. It has a protective guard on the blade edge, so beginners feel safe, but it can still bite you. Then I think there are the Professionals and Supers. Oh, and the Feather "light" I think, which i've never tried.
Kai has the Captain Titan mild (pink), Protouch Mild (which has a guard like the feather pro-guard), and I think, the Kai captain blade (standard).

I haven't tried enough of them often enough to tell you much, but personally I really like the Protouch blades, which I find very smooth and long lasting. As with everything else though, the next person along will probably have a different opinion.

Thank you Rick and Brian. I appreciate your advice. Have either of you found a great place to buy the blades from or are all of the vendors priced about the same?

I live in Japan, and I assume they're cheaper here, but with shipping you'd probably end up being better off buying stateside. I'm sure some members from there will be able to give better advice. Sorry I can't help more.

You might get some blades showing up on BST. As a new member you can't put up a WTB buy you can still buy stuff that's for sale there.

Ordered some pro guard from WCS. I'd like to try the pro blades as well but we'll start with these first. Thanks again- David

I use the feather pros in the black packet.
I've tried the Kai captains but be warned they stick out a touch more than the pros.
Dorco also sell blades but I haven't tried them yet despite getting some earlier in the year.
If you want to try a couple of blades I can tape them to some card and send them over if you want, just pm me.

I have been using the Feather Pro Super blades lately and it seems that because the blade sticks out a bit further from the CJB that a slighter angle can be utilized resulting in less irritation and very close shaves. This could also just be that I am really dialing in my technique so I will also say that the original Feathers work really well for me also.

Dave,

I hadn't really given that blade any thought because it's marketed towards someone with a "heavy or course beard".
I'll have to give that one a try.

Thank you,
David

I first started with the ProGuard as I needed to get myself mentally ready. I had tried a real straight and a CJB/Feather AC type before I was ready and gave myself some pretty scary cuts. When I started again with the ProGuards i rebuilt my confidence in no time flat. Now I'm up to the "regular" blades. Also just because the ProGuards have the wire guard on them, it doesn't mean you can't get a good shave from them.

I've got a few shaves with a pro guard blade so far. Not perfect but I'm getting used to it and haven't done any major damage yet. I might order a pack of the super blades to try after I get through a couple of the pro guard blades. I'd like to try the wider blade as I'm thinking I might like the angle of it a bit better.

The first blade I tried in my AC DX was the blue light. It is the shortest projecting blade and is harder to utilize as a result. Sticking out further gives more flexibility letting you dial your technique in as you are not restrained by the blade. Not many posters seem to note this issue.

This is probably because the farther the blade sticks out the more intimidating the razor appears. In fact bad technique with a Super Feather blade may be more harmful than bad technique with a blade with a slighter protrusion. However, the advantage of the longer protrusion is that it doesn't require one to use a steeper angle to cut the hair and that should minimize the irritation and likelihood of nicks and cuts. In the end, though, it is all about learning the technique and using a blade that allows you to be less hesitant will allow that technique to become natural faster.

I think there are some Dorco blades which are also ok for the CJB (so I've read). ebay has plenty, try the seller 'purosdave' (note: purosdave is not me, I don't know him/her/ I have not bought from him/her, I do not endorse him/her - I just know he/she sells razor equipment as I was thinking of getting a Sam Seong or CJB and some blades from this seller). good luck!

Mark,
Thanks for the information.
I checked and I actually bought my CJB razor from the ebay seller purosdave. I would purchase from him again.
He delivered it right away and it arrived just as described.

Someone here gave me a link when I asked where to find one (that was very helpful and appreciated).

I paid 35 and a couple dollars for shipping.
You might be able to find it cheaper if you wait long enough and look hard enough but I though it was fair being that it was new and not used. I'm getting more comfortable with it. Each day I like it more and more.

Someone had a couple Artist club SS razors on the BST yesterday for $75, one was a kamisori and the other a folding. It's just a bit more than what you were going to buy but maybe it's worth it to you. I'm not sure if they sold yet but you can check if you're interested.
