Blade Inventory: 25 years worth

Reading some of these inventory lists reminds me of that old ad (ca 1950s) which went "How are you fixed for blades?" They obviously didn't have B&B members in mind.

Me? I have about 600 DE, 150 SE. At my age, probably a lifetime supply.

I used to have a huge stash of NOS blades, but sold off most of them. now I'm down to:

800 Spoilers

400 Feather

80 Wilks

At 15 shaves for the spoilers (conservative), 2 for the feathers, and 5 for the wills, I have 13,200 shaves ahead of me, or 37.71 years of shaving 350 days per year.

But really the question should be: How am I set for creams? :cursing:

Decided I should update my inventory which sits in a cardboard box in the basement. I honestly didn't know how many I had of what blade. This was the result:

35 Sharp
160 RIP
260 Bluebird
475 Astra Superior Platinum
240 Gillette Bleu Extra
140 Gillette Sharpedge
110 Derby
65 Swedes
20 Feathers
90 Personna Lab Preps
80 Shark Super Stainless
28 Schick injector blades
several dozen SE blades purchased years ago from Amazon

That makes for 1,645 DE blades. At an average of four shaves per blade (more for the GBE's and Swedes) that makes for 6,580 shaves. I shave 5 times/week, so 260 times/year. Given current usage that means I have enough blades for the next 25 years. :w00t:

And I'm not even counting the SE blades, which give me 5-6 good shaves per blade. I think I need to get in touch with the Blade Swap Guy.

Oh, and I turn 60 this year.

I was wondering if the film makers of the movie "Blast from the Past" did a calculation of the amount of blades it would require for 35 years when I saw the scene of Alicia Silverstone's character glance in the hotel bathroom and I saw a DE razor.

I hope the O/P's basement has zero moisture. The cutting edges of blades in storage can be degraded by moisture in poor storage condidtions. I would recommend the blades be stored in the driest area of the house.

well.. no place has ZERO moisture. Can you image the static electricity? yowza!

air-tight tupperware - silicone seal
with (renewable) dessicant to removes the moisture from the air inside the box

You don't want the "rust-prevention" chips/paper because those release a vapor of something that prevents rust from forming/sticking. I use them in my toolboxes in the garage to keep the tools rust free. But I wouldn't drag them across my face my whole life...

Thanks for the reminder. The basement is very dry in the winter, due to the wood stove going. In the summer we use a dehumidifier. It could be dryer but I haven't noticed any deterioration of blade quality.
