What's new

blade curvature

Hello! I've been poking around shaving forums for a couple of years now and I've been using straights exclusively for about a year and a half. I recently bought a nice looking Dovo Astrale from an ebay seller and when it arrived, I put it to a 1k stone for bevel setting. This is what I got:

To me, it is clear that the blade is curved. The seller says this is due to my honing error. Regardless, I'd like to know if this blade is useable. I'd appreciate any advice you may have to offer. Thanks in advance!

Interesting that yours appears to be heel-high in both pictures, almost like the surface itself is not flat.

But my Astrale is the same way, though not quite that extreme.
I've tried to hone mine 3 times as my honing technique has improved over the last 6 months and I still can't get the thing to shave nicely.
Mine has been relegated back to it's blue coffin and replaced with a Revisor stainless I got on the BST last week.

No big deal to me, it's one of those things that I bought because I thought it would be neat to have a set of scales with my "sign" on them even though I don't follow that. I do like the ebony scales, but the blade itself was nothing exciting even if it wasn't warped.

I think I must have applied a little more pressure toward the heel end and caused it to flex a little. The surface was as flat as a diamond plate can get it.

I meant the surface that the photo was taken on.

You CAN NOT induce that level of warp by honing.
You can hone in an angle, or you can hone a smile or a frown, but if the edge is bent, the edge is bent.
It is not uncommon with Dovo razors.

Yep, it's a warped blade; there's nothing you can do about it. It's useable, if you can hone it, but why bother? And like cb91710 said, that kind of warping has nothing to do with your honing technique; it was probably warped when it left the factory...

So then I am actually blessed that my one Dovo straight razor is not bent then. A good way too compensate would to do a slight up or down measure on the scale to get to different parts of the blade while honing. Though the best bet is to go to the straight razor forum.
