As my signature says, I have been using wilkinson swords. There is a steal of a deal for Astra's on amazon, 100 for $9. Anybody able to compare those to swords?

Excellent, my bro uses merkur, but at .50 a blade, and me a head shaver, it adds up. I too get my swords at wally world, 1.76 before taxes. Hard to beat 17.6 cents a blade! (except with 9¢!)

Just ordered those astras in the 100 pack from amazon, $9.08 with free shipping, hope they're at least half as good as you say, but if not im sure i can adjust the technique to correct.

Really surprised by those numbers! Didn't expect to see so many 3 and fewer guys! Guess we'll see how the trend goes as responses increases.

DE blades 4-7 shave per blade
SE blades 10-14 shaves per blade
Injector blades 12-18 shaves per blade
Disposable straight razor blades 24-28 shaves per blade

Looks like you missed a few options on this poll too :001_smile

Depends on the blade but I usually wont even mess with the possibility of a dull blade. When I use derby blades I change them every shave.

Definitely right! Do you change you apparatus that often? or just use a DE for a couple days. switch to SE for 2 wks, injector for about 2 wks, then straight for a month then back?

I remember the derby that came with my Muhle... shaved one cheek, threw it away and put on on my wilkinson sword. Automatic improvement and I was still on my first DE shave ever! Those derbys are scary with the irritation!

I shave with a different razor every day. I go about a month or more before I get back to using a razor again. I keep about 8-10 DE blades unwrapped at a time and will choose a razor then pick a blade for it. When done I remove the blade, wipe the razor down and put put the razor away until the next time I feel I want to use it. The DE or SE blade gets patted dry on a towel and moved to my "how may shaves computer". Injector blades and disposable straight blades stay in the razors as it is too much to try to remove them every time but DE and SE blades come out and get stored until the next shave.

I keep track of how many shaves are on a blade by placing the blades on numbered papers where the number corresponds to how many shaves are on the blade sitting on the paper. If a blade lasts more than 6 shaves it goes back to paper #1 and starts down the row again. I have given up trying to keep track of the number of shaves on an injector or disposable straight as there are too many of them and the possibilities are too endless. I know how long an injector or disposable straight lasts from past experience and change them when they "feel" gone.

Quite the elaborate setup! I guess you have been other than cartridge shaving for quite some time. Everyone of those brands of blades I would have to order online. Are they each that different of a shave?

Astras are my favorites! I get about 5 shaves per blade. Wilkinsons are not really desireable to me. I've used 4, I think, and i"m not a big fan.

I've never used a cart/system razor. Started with DE in the mid 60's and stuck with that until joining B&B and now I use DE, SE, injectors, and straight razors :001_smile

I did buy a 5 blade monster Remington when Woot had them for under $10 (about a month ago). It came with a stockpile of replacement carts but I have not taken it out of the package. Probably won't either.

The difference (to me) is very subtitle. Almost negligible. I just have them so I use them. I have found that some will last longer than others before starting to pull/tug but other than that they are all sharp enough to get the job done.

Depending on the blade and how I use it, I can get up to 6 "uses" per blade. I straight shave a lot, so often the DE is just used for clean-up. Since it really isn't a full 3 pass shave with the DE I can get more out of them. That said, they are cheap enough to pitch whenever they don't "feel right." I do get a lot more out of m SE blades. I use them instead of the straight when I'm pressed for time. I can get about 15 uses out of an SE blade between full shaves and clean-ups. Some of my straights are 100 years old, so I guess I'm getting almost unlimited uses out of those blades. :wheelchair:

I get 5 good shaves out of an Astra SP, but I include head shaves in there so I would say that it 3 face shaves and 2 head shaves is probably equal to at least 6 regular shaves. See how the math works? The head is a lot more hair to shave, but on the other hand, if the blade is getting dull, my head is more forgiving than my face. I can usually get one more head shave out of a blade than I would a face shave, just because the skin isn't as sensitive.

I use Feather blades. I don't have a tough beard so I can get 9 shaves out of them. When I first came back to DE shaving I was using the Merkur blades that came with the razor. I did not like them at all. In fact I almost gave up on DE shaving. Then I tried the Feathers and loved them. For me the Merkur blades pull so much, I could use a Feather blade that has 9 shaves on it and it is smoother than a new Merkur. In fact I have a 10 pack of Merkur blades if anyone wants them, PM me. I will send them to the first person to respond. I will never use them.

I've found the Russian Voskhod (now my 'go-to'), blades to be 'awesome', forgiving and perfect with no pulling or tugging, very, very smooth, (albeit a 'weeper' now & then..but zero 'nicks'), no irratation and/or razor burn that %99.9 of the time results in CCS's in 3 passes (WTG, CTG & ATG), with 2 great shaves per blade (I shave every-other day with Saturdays as my shaving 'day off'),...and are very compatible with both of my Merkur 23C & 38C razors.
