Blade Advice

no need to fear the Feather, just start slowly and carefully. its my everyday blade now.

I am a fan of the mild razor-sharp blade approach. I Use feather almost exclusively now particularly with mild razors. You’ll be shocked how smooth and comfortable the shave is.

Just curious, what mild razor are you using?

these days Im on a ATT Atlas Classic H1 with a feather, so not mild at all, but for a long time I was using feathers in a couple of different mild Merkurs (HD, slant, classic OC). Worked like a charm in those, the slant was really nice. Now I really enjoy the blade feel of the H1, was considering adding something really mild to my setup like maybe the AS D2 just for variety.

The best thing you can do is try a sample of different blades. If you are in the U.S., I can send you a sampler of good blades.

A lot of truth is to be found to
the idea that mild razors perform
at their best with sharp blades .

But the ideal blade for every each
one of us is as different as our faces .

So ,according to MY taste
(may not suit or match YOURS ) ,
with razors I ‘ve used and
I consider to be mild those were
the blades that stood out from
quite few of other ones :

Feather : Maybe the sharpest blabe
at first shave, which can be rough ,
if you start being careless.
Never lasted for more than two or
three shaves .Considering also their price ,they are a “ nope ” .

Bic Chrome Platinum : The first shave
can be rough .At their second ( 3 pass ) and third shave ,these blades seem
to be sharper than a Feather ar it’s first shave .Noticeable decline of
performance after the 5th -6th shave .
Not so friendly blade ,though.

Gillette Nacets : Smooth ,sharp and
long lasting ( got 17 superb -3 pass
shaves - from a single blade ! ) .
Sharp ,needs respect to be paid,
but quite “friendly” and smooth .

Gillette Rubie :
Can be rough .They are very sharp ,
but also last for four to five 3-pass
shaves.

Gillette 7 o ‘clock SharpEdge
( aka Yellows ) :
Sharp ,pretty sharp ,not so
smooth sometimes but still
friendly blades.They last for
four to six shaves .

Gillette 7 o ‘clock Super Platinum
Made in India ( aka Black Ninjas )
Great blade ! Sharp ,very sharp and
with good manners .Smooth ,predictable and long lasting too .
Superb blades !

Wilkinson Sword : Maybe the
least sharp of the list, but still
sharper than many others.
Very smooth rides for the
experienced hand.Not a good
blade for someone new to wet
shaving .They can give more
than 10 shaves and still are
sharp enough for even more.
Awesome blades for travelling.
Three blades can keep you
shaved for a whole month of
everyday use.
Extreme sharpness
durability !

Just tried two blades with the Jr...a Voshkod and a Kai. Although the Voshkod felt milder (the Kai had a distinct blade feel), the Voshkod somehow caused more irritation (and a weeper) and didn't shave as close. I don't know...perhaps the blade feel on the Kai allowed me to make minor adjustments to the pressure which, in turn, gave me more control over the razor? Don't know...this is all new to me. What I do know is that the Jr/Kai combo just gave me probably the closest, irritation-free shave of my life!
