What's new

blackman's shave journal

Alright, well I've been mulling over picking up a straight for a couple weeks. I've only been using a DE for a little over 2 months. I guess my progression was pretty quick. This weekend I decided to snag a shave ready straight off the BST. I ended up getting a Wostenholm Pipe razor from Rick (aka Wid). She got here this morning and even with her flea-bitten scales I still think she's gorgeous. Also, my SRAD is so bad already that I also purchased a Genco Fluid Steel from Tony (aka TonyN) a couple of days later. She arrived this morning as well. Also a beauty. Thank you both again. I also have a very cheap 2 inch strop but it gets the job done. I will definitely invest in a better strop soon.

I decided to test drive the Pipe razor after my shower. Lathered up with Mike's Pine and Cedarwood and the mighty midget (I love this brush btw). I've been using DRH a lot lately but decided to go with the Mike's because it gives me the greasiest lather with no fuss. My first pass was very unnerving. I went extremely slow and I was very unconfident and intimidated. Needless to say I didn't mow down many wiskers. Didn't cut myself though. I think the key to this is confident strokes.

The second pass went alot smoother. It was another WTG pass. Still hesitant but my strokes were more firm. One weeper on my neck but it closed by the time I lathered up for a third go around. It was also another WTG pass with some ATG in the mix. I was mostly trying to get my technique down more than have a flawless smooth face. No nicks. Alot of stubble left on my chin.

Over all impression: I love this. What satisfaction! I was pretty amused too. I couldn't help but chuckle throughout the shave. I cannot wait for the next session. So much so that I gave the Genco a go later on to try and rid my face of the left over stubble. Ha, I'm sick.

Even though I didn't get every whisker down, I'm still proud of myself. I immediately stuck all my DEs in a drawer because when I shave now, it will be with a straight only. I'm really glad I started this at 25 and not later. I'll try to keep this updated everyday but we'll see how it goes. I hope it can help in some way. The other journals here have definitely helped me. Anyway, thanks for reading guys.

Nice razors and a fine first shave! The first time is always a mix of fear and exitement, at least it was for me. Have fun with it. Hope you'll keep up the journal. I really like reading them and making my own!

I like the fact you chuckled. I did the same thing. Every now and then I'd stop, hold out the razor, grin like a nut case, shake my head, ask myself what the heck I was doing, and yes, chuckle. All the emotions get so mixed up, that's kind of what comes out.

I think it was my eighth shave or so, when I got all philosophical: looking at the 100+ year old tool in my hand covered in its patina, considering its history and all that. Great shave, not because it was all smooth and whatnot, but just the whole experience.

All the best!

Great! I get the same feeling even after a zillion shaves. It is a nice hobby.

I am on the road - used a Feather AC to shave and then decided I needed to do a head shave and was in a hurry so I dragged out the Red Tip and zipped through the shave. Then, just as I was cleaning it, I stopped and looked at it. The darn thing was almost as old as I am and it was in perfect condition (for a well kept but used razor) and I just stared at it for a few seconds. There is definitely a zen to shaving.

Congrats AJ. Keep up the good work and it will come to you. My first shave I was far to nervous to chuckle, that's for sure.

Acceptable shave this morning. More so than yesterday. The confidence in my strokes is building. I did 3 passes, 2 WTG and 1 XTG ( and a little touch up on my chin; still the most challenging area for me). I nicked myself pretty good with the point on my neck. No styptic necessary though. Still have some stubble but I'm trying not to push it.

My speed is getting better. 15 min for all 3 passes (it took me over 10min for the first pass yesterday! ). This is really nice, even as a beginner. I welcome the challenge.

Way to go. I'm brand new too and it is still a bit surreal. With modern conveniences like multi-blade cartridges and canned goo, it's nice, albeit somewhat strange, to be using a tool that has been around for a long time. I remember hearing stories of my great grandfather and grandfather shaving with straights (and the latter with a DE) and it's pretty of cool to have that connection with our ancestors. Who knows, maybe they're looking down on us and saying "no you dummy, that's not how you do it..."

Haha, that's definitely what they're saying to me.

Ugh, I feel as if I took a step back tonight. I decided to shave tonight because I won't have much time in the morning due to an early work day. Well, I got to take my time and I was fumbling all over the place. Questioning myself, questioning the razor, back to myself. My technique is horrid. My hand placement needs a lot of work. *sigh*, oh well, I'm still confident that I'll get this. I've nicked my tiny strop up pretty good so I'm gonna go with newspaper until I get the money for a wider strop, one that is atleast as wide as the length of the blade. I'll have another go at it tomorrow evening after work. Thanks for reading guys.

Thats totally cool, but how do you do the chin and lower lip? these are what keeps me from going straight, I am fussy and want it smooth

Been thinking about a straight myself but, I haven't worked up a big enough head of steam yet. Reading your journal is giving me some courage! I'm subscribing to your thread so I can learn from your experience. Looking forward to shave #4!!!!

Thanks man. I've now seen that 3 times. One day.

Oh yeah Rick, the reason I didn't pm you more questions was because I'd like to ask them on the open board. That way the info gets to everyone. Well here's one of them; would it be best to get a linen side of the strop as well when I get a new one? Is it worth the extra money? It would seem so but I'd love your input.

Well I need to get off to bed. Thanks guys. I'll be back tomorrow.

you will get there with the hand placement in no time.
Have you tried stropping with a butter knife to get the hang of it. go slow and focus on the turn. once you have the muscle memory then you should be good with a straight.

Straight: Wostenholm

Much better results today. 2 WTG passes, 1 XTG and some touch ups (especially my chin; most difficult spot. even more so than the neck).
I made a huge progression today. I had been holding the tang with my fingertips and my stroke was less confident and fluid. Well today I decided to choke up on the tang and my form improved dramatically. We'll see how this goes next time because I only discovered this on my touch up part of the shave. I just feels right though.

All in all, an acceptable shave. Closest to date. Some weepers, but nothing serious. Well I'm off to the BST to get rid of a few DEs to have some extra cash for straight accessories, if that tells you where my confidence level is atm.

Until tomorrow, gentlemen.
