Black Nickel and Black Rhodium

Do any of you kind folks have experience with one or both of these plating materials? I really like the look of a shiny-dark (hematite-ish) razor, and wonder about durability.

My research seems to suggest that 'black nickel' is somewhat fragile, while the 'black rhodium' (ruthenium?) is harder (more abrasive resistant).

Is there any way to tell the difference between the two platings just by looking at the razor?

Fragile in what way? Like the gold plating on vintage Gillette razors?

hmmm no experience but i really wanna get my fatboy done in black rhodium :biggrin1: do you know someone that is plating in black rhodium? if so who??

Rhodium is a member of a platinum group and is very hard, but you have to remember that it's only a very thin plating. Gold on the other hand is rather soft and that, along with the thin coating, will make it rather prone to wear. Nickel isn't quiet as hard as rhodium but it is harder than gold.
