What's new

Bit of a strange question

My girlfriend's father's birthday is coming up, and I'm thinking of either getting him a gift card to X establishment, or a safety razor (the razor being her idea after finding about my new obsession). He's turning 56. I enjoy safety razors because in my opinion they're better than cartridge razors, and until I found out about wetshaving, DE's had never occurred to me. My question is do yall think his use of a cartridge razor is an informed decision? He's 56, so I'd imagine he learned to shave with a DE, and knowingly switched to a cartridge razor when they introduced them. If that's the case, I'd feel like getting him a DE would be like getting me an eight track tape player. Any input? Thanks in advance.

I asked around for purposes of buying gifts for the groomsmen (who do not wetshave) in my upcoming wedding, and I was told that it would be best to get them a brush and some soap or cream. That way you are giving them the option to experience great shaves, but you are not forcing an entirely new method of shaving upon them. That is the route I have chosen to follow. Nonetheless, I do have razors waiting for each of them if they show any interest in pursuing the hobby. That is my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision!

Regards,
Chase

There won't be much learning curve for him. He might like it.

Remember its her idea. If he likes it, it gives you something in common to talk about, if it goes south its her idea. I say don't sweat it.

Does he like older things? Some fellows enjoy their vintageness others are new and improved. What type of fellow is he? The trick to the best gifts is to know the recipient's tastes and tendencies. My .02.

Well, he's very interested (and I mean VERY) in cigars and single malt scotch. I'm inclined to say DE shaving has something sort of akin to those things. In fact, he's the reason I became interested in wetshaving to begin with. He bought me a boar brush and some soap. Upon looking up how to use them I came across mantic's videos on youtube haha.
Edit: I think he owns a brush and a soap, although I'm not sure how often he shaves with them. I was thinking of getting him http://westcoastshaving.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=51 along with a $5 bottle of C.O. Bigelow cream.

I'm 56, but I never shaved with a DE until 4 months ago. I used Schick injectors and Track II's when I first started. Electrics became the norm for everyone. In college, people were laughed at if they didn't use an electric.

Electrics dry your skin and make it flakey. The parade of increasing blades in cartridges is a joke. They shave fine, but it's annoying. If he's like most of us were, shaving is nothing to be enjoyed.

My suggestion is to introduce him to wet shaving. I had zero experience with it and it hooked me instantly. A brush, a nice soap or creme, nice hand towels, and a gift certificate for a razor and blades and you'll have suggested something to him that will feel new, nostalgic, healthy, and private. Trust me, if he's using cartridges to shave, it will raise his curiosity and he'll appreciate the attention behind what you've done.

Oh, and make sure he gets a look at this website.

Wow, I'm jealous. I have never dated a girl whose father gave me shaving stuff for my birthday. She's a keeper!

It sounds like you are on the right track. A vintage Gillette might also work, if he would appreciate its character.

and for that matter, what kinds of blades do yall think would be a safe bet? I'd imagine a blade that's too sharp or harsh could really turn him off to DE shaving right away lol
