The Guidelines

Before you receive the box
  • Subscribe To This Thread
  • Pay close attention to THIS thread.
  • If it is coming up on your turn, and you won't be around, let us know. Arrangements can be made to keep up the box moving and come back to you later.
  • Make sure you know beforehand who you are shipping it to. Get in contact, and get contact info.

When you receive the box
  • Immediately post in THIS thread that you received it.
  • Take a look at what you'd like to have. If you don't want a whole bottle of cologne or an entire tube of shaving cream, decant some and leave the rest. If you want the whole thing, take the whole thing.
  • Don't be shy. Take stuff out. Be generous. Fill it back up. Put in something that will make someone's day.
  • Put back as much value as you took out.
  • Try not to put in anything that's less than half full, especially samples, unless it's a unique, expensive, or hard to find product. It's just not worth shipping a bunch of large bottles that are mostly empty. It takes up too much space. Nor does a 1mL vial that's 1/4 full do much good for anyone.
  • You may be asked to purge a few items at some point.
  • Don't put common drug store items in the box. Only put in things you'd be happy to receive.
  • If you don't have any shaving items another B&B member would enjoy having, find something else that B&B members enjoy: pens and tools are great.

When you're done exchanging
  • If the box is getting too big, prune out the less desirable stuff, and use it or PIF.
  • Ship promptly.
  • Use a shipper at your own discretion. USPS Flat rate, UPS ground, Fed Ex, no one really cares who brings their box.
  • CYA: get a tracking number and delivery confirmation.

When you ship the box, Post in THIS thread
  • that you've shipped it
  • to whom you have shipped it
  • a tracking number

After you send the box
  • Thank the site. Though not enforced, I highly encourage you to become a contributor and support your vendors.

The Prunes
After throwing away about 5 almost empty and leaking bottles, this is what was left of Big Box 2 that didn't make it to Big Box 3. Sorry to say, but 10 of these items got tossed. The rest were traded for other items, mostly at the NYC meet. The box started out as a large flat rate box and ended up 3.7 times the size and about 30 lbs. It's great that people put in more than they took out, but there were things in there (like some of the items in the picture) that were better to leave out. Before you put something in, take a moment to ask yourself whether it's worth it for 10 different people to pay to ship the item, only to have it end up in the trash. I tried to find a home for them, but in the end, I couldn't bring myself to sell or PIF what was left because I didn't feel right asking someone to use them, so after a couple weeks of trying, I had a moment of strength and disposed of about a dozen items total. There were also about 8 bars of bath soap that are now under my sink, so I'll have to put something nice in the box to make up for it.

If the box gets too large, just prune out the junk less useful items and leave the good stuff.

Ha yeah I just think I remember one of the BB's having that policy. Alternatively we could post what we put in/took out after we ship it. Or it probably would be best to do nothing to keep the mystery

Your call!
It's fun for everyone to watch the box change. If it's all mystery, all you ever see is one incarnation and no changes, and noone else gets to enjoy the fun. Besides, I already spilled the beans by posting pictures. But like I mentioned, not everything's in the pictures.

I subscribed to the thread, and dont know if I will even get it. I will say one thing though, that this is a very cool idea. It lets people try things they might not have tried before, and I like that.

unfortunately just subscribing to this thread will not get you in on the big box; the list was decided upon some time ago. the requirements as of october 19th were 125 posts, 91 days as a member, and to be a contributor. those changed over time slightly, but they were set high to try to keep the quality of the box high.

don't worry though, there will be a bb4, 5, etc as long as people continue to want to participate. keep tabs on the process and you might be able to sign up for the next round.

WooHoo Can't wait!!! I can't see the pics right now, so my anticipation will keep going until I get home and can check them out.

I am so excited for this, I can't wait! #6 on the list--thrilled!

I've got my eye on things of mine to send on in this box--can't wait!

Just want to give a shout for the NYC members that donated & horse traded with some of the Big Box 2 contents at the recent [thread=179290]NYC Potlatch 2[/thread] meet. They took home several items from Big Box 2 in exchange for some new items, and donated a bunch more stuff besides to benefit B&B.

As mentioned above, some items would go missing from the pictures above. Specifically, 4 razors, 3 soaps, and an odd or end or two not in the pictures are going into a fund-raiser/PIF/"I don't know what exactly yet" box to benefit B&B.

Trying to coordinate these two things caused some delay in getting Big Box 3 rolling. Thanks for your patience, thanks to the NYC members, and thanks to the Big Box 2 members for helping out B&B.

I am not worried about it. I understand what you are saying about wanting to keep the worth of the box high. I hope with the next one I can be a part of it. If not oh well, that is life sometimes. Those of you who are getting it, it looks like you are in for a real treat.

Another way to do it would be to include a small notebook that would travel with the box ... each participant could list his take-outs and put-ins, along with any comments.

The downside is that it would take up space in the box. The upside is that it would add another dimension of fun.

One more delay for one more potential super secret project. Might be stealing a few more small items from the box, but I don't think you'll miss them, it's not the really good stuff. Anyway, within 3 hops, the box will probably be overflowing again. Either way, I promise the box will be in the mail within a week at the outside, but I'm shooting for Friday.

Once the cat's are out of the bag, I'll post pictures of the other goodies that found other homes.
