Big Ben Blades at Gentlemens Best

A few weeks ago I stopped into GB to pick up some more soap and some Feathers. I had recently switched from the Derby to the Feather and had run out.

Ray was out of the Feathers and handed me a free pack of Big Bens to try. I admit, I was a bit skeptical. Paper packaging, made in Egypt. I figured a facial massacre. Ray was right, I was wrong. I cannot tell you how great the shave I got from them was.

As sharp as the Feathers, but extremely forgiving. As Ray puts it, I get the tingle that I get from the Feathers but they're a quarter of the price! I picked up a sleeve (100 razors) for $16.

As I was leaving the store I just had to say how much I was saving outloud. 4 friggin Gillette razors $16. $4+ per razor. 100 Big Bens $16. $0.16 per razor. Awesome!!!

Ray has them online now. http://gentlemensbest.com/razors.aspx

IIRC, the blades are made by the same company, but I don't think they're exactly the same blade. At least they feel/perform differently for me.

I just stumbled across where I read this. It was on The Superior Shave's site:

"I don't know why one manufacturing firm chooses to brand so many
different trademarks for essentially the same product as it is
distributed on our earth, but [. . .] It is likely that these "Big Ben" blades are identical to the Sharks in function"

Naturally, I can't vouch for this, as I've only used the Sharks. And maybe they aren't the same.

Interesting. Thx. My suspicion is that the specs are slightly different, but it could be a case of a different brand/label for a different market.

It seems that Lord might do this on a lot of their blades. Or do they really have that many different blade lines? It makes me wonder...hmmm.

I'm adding my 2¢ on this old thread. I got some Big Ben super stainless blades in a sampler and used one this morning for a 3-pass shave. Maybe I should chalk it up to good face preparation, but I couldn't have asked for a better, smoother shave.

Which helps convince me I shouldn't give any brand a bad review without trying it a few times, because preparation varies on a daily basis (for me at least).

My personal experience is that Sharks and Big Ben are not the same... I do really enjoy the Big Bens though I still prefer a Feather

I had a few, Lord Stainless, Shark, Big Ben and I can't remember the other, and they all felt about the same to me and I didn't care too much for them. But then, Racer! Loved it. Thought it was smooth as anything, though only a 2 or 3 shave blade probably, but something I would buy a 100 lot of. I wonder how much of this is in my head, or if Lord really only has a couple different blades, and Racer happened to be the good one?
