Best Way to Start?

I'm trying to get my brother interested in proper wet-shaving. He was along on a trip to a C&E store where I had to "teach" him why we were there, explain all about DE's, brushes, and creams (my older brother too, by 7 years!). He doesn't believe me when I tell him about getting irritation and cut free shaves. He currently uses some sort of multi blade contraption and Edge gel (he isn't happy with the result, but he isn't willing to spend money on anything either).

What would the best way to start him off? I dove head first buying a DE, brush, and some Taylor's after reading a few posts on the forum. I was thinking of lending him on of my DE's to try with his gel, or should I also lend him one of my brushes and some cream?

I don't think lending your brother a DE razor to use with his gel will work. The gels don't soften the whiskers as well as using a brush and some good quality soap. If he's lucky he might get a good shave with the gel alternatively, he might be put off DEs for good.

I would either lend him the whole set up, Razor, Brush and soap if you don't want to spend anything alternatively get him a small tub of Proraso and a cheap boar brush and lend him your razor, at least he'll be on his way to a better experience plus he'll be able to use the soap and brush with his multibladed razor if he really doesn't like the DE thing.

I just put together a starter kit for my high school aged nephew--he barely needs to shave, but his Dad wants him to start shaving with a blade after beginning on an electric, so I gave him a shave last week with a Vision, SR101 and Taylors avocado. He was thrilled with the stuff--here's what I'm bringing him next week:

Omega boar brush--6 bucks at Target
Chas. Tyrwhitt Lemon & Cedar SC and AS--4 bucks each on sale, nice deal and decent stuff
Gillette Fat Boy razor (eBay score for 10 bucks), with a box of Merkur blades

Total investment: under $25

I wanted him to have decent, if not great, stuff for his first kit, and its all stuff he could replace or supplement pretty easily. You might try a similar approach with your brother--I'm thinking of doing the same for my brothers--all 3 of them!

Well OTHER Kyle, funny you should mention that. I was with my brother in DC last week and as we sipped our coffees after dinner (a very nice cafe con leche at a Tapas restaurant BTW), the topic of shaving came-up (of course it was me that initiated it; I can't ever remember having wet-shaving come up in casual conversation ever, but it seems to more and more these days :001_rolle ).

Anyway, I'm going to start him off with a C&E Best Badger Brush and a few samples of cream. I opted against a razor & blade for now only because that takes a serious commitment in learning the craft and he should see if it even interests him.

For creams, I just bought him a tub of C&E Almond Shave cream, and will also bring samples of Taylor's Avocado, Proraso, and maybe some C&E Nomad.

So,

I am wondering if brothers are the first target of most wetshaving enthusiasts when they decide that it is their right... no, their moral duty to spread the wetshaving-word to non-believers. So far I've introduced my younger brother into this world (convinced him to pick up some stuff at the local C&E... and he decided to get a Futur on his own - I would have suggested the HD since it is a little less expensive and doesn't come with the temptation to "play"). Do brothers just make easy targets where we can try out sales pitches?

Definitely so when we were younger ("Hey go and ask Dad to take us to that R-rated movie" or "Hey, I'll sell you all these comics for 20 bucks" and "OK, I'll drive you and your friends to the movies, but they have to chip in $5 each for gas")

I suppose this is making up for Bad Karma Past

hahaha I would say so YES, Im trying to convert a guy HAlf Greek Half Swedish
to me he is like a brother so I consider him to be one how morronic he may be for using "Goo in a Can " and the suicide Mach3 blades. I would not use a MAch 3 on a Goats *** ! let alone my face ! DE is very difficult to learn im still touching up my technique ! most difficult area to get BBS is the chin area and under the chin im hoping an injector razor will help me out with that area. im also thinking it would be better perhaps for some newbies to start off using an injector and from there on go to a DE . Im also trying to score a new Fatboy so this guy can have my other Fatboy for cheap he will get plenty of blades from me and some creams to try out atleast he can be saved I have also a Viking friend who is beyond help he shaves with an electric razor..go fight that.. all the Raki wont help you !
