Best way to deal with the anti-smoking/tobacco crowd

Well on the forum it doesn't get egregious very often, and honestly it doesn't come up in public very often either. The most grief I ever catch is from extended family around the holidays. I invite them to spend time on a nicely prepared outdoor aria when I smoke.:wink2:

I also burst into song when I smoke.

I've managed to ignore it on the forum so far.

In public it's always be strangers giving me grief for smoking cigs. The fake cough, or the "smoking will kill you, you know". I judge whether or not I think they are serious before saying anything. If they say it with a smirk on their face I tend to make a joke back. More recently however they were completely stone-faced when they said it, which rubbed me the wrong way and they got a snarky response. I've not had anyone say anything now that I've started taking the pipe out in public... yet.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I got the "smoking can kill you" once. I said "stopping me from smoking may kill you". It wasn't gentlemanly, but the conversation ended there.

I don't give them the time of day. I respect their rights and they can respect mine.

Pretty much my way of looking at it. I'm not out to get confrontational with anybody, just not worth it. I'm also respectful and don't smoke when I know there may be people around that have an issue with it. I mostly smoke in my truck when I'm on the road or at home.

The only comment I ever got was several years ago I was getting out of my truck at a store. I took a few puffs off my cigar before setting it in the ashtray to go inside. As I was getting out a young girl yells, "Ew mommy, that man is smoking!" The mother turned red with embarassment and apologized. I just laughed and told her no offense taken. Actually it was pretty damn cute, lol

Ha I did say something like that once. But he knew I was joking when I said it. Was a friendly German man that I would run into every once in a while.

I usually don't have anybody say much of anything to me about it. I tend not to attract too many folks that want to challenge me on what I may be doing. Besides that I usually smoke in my truck or in my own house or around other smokers so I'm usually with folks that are cool about it. I've had folks give me the "smoking's gonna kill you" crap, and I gently remind them that they're gonna die too. Nobody's getting out of this one alive so we may as well enjoy some of the finer things that life has to offer.

If you know there may be trouble you can choose your tobacco based on the situation. A sweet smelling aromatic is less offensive to most than an full english, however there are some people that will be a PITA no matter what, in that case go for the heavy english just to tick them off, or better yet a Monte "A" or something similar.

Never thought about that before. I usually don't go looking for trouble, but there is a friend of the GF who's house I don't want to be invited back to. Might be perfect to pull out an old latakia heavy blend I've had cellared for years. Awesome idea!

If it is outdoors I'll give them a sarcastic salute while saying "Thank you, Captain Obvious!".

If it is indoors, its either my house or a casino. If it is a casino then I remind them that it is a casino. Never had problems at my house.

more seriously, I usually mirror whatever attitude they present. If they are rude, so am I.

"Gentlemen, you may smoke." King Edward VII of England

So far the only person to give me grief is my Father. But since he used to smoke before I was born and recently had a third of one of his lungs removed for cancer, he at least is justified in what he is saying. So I try not to argue with him about it and try not remind him that I smoke.

But in public, I just had a quote come to mind that would be a good response to those that say smoking will kill you. It's from Braveheart ;) "Every man dies, but not every man lives...." And then I would append, "I choose to live" and then I will grin at them.

I've never been given grief for it, but I do have a response ready:
Why yes I do, How about doing the world a favor and starting up the habit yourself?

I just mention that every scientific study shows that pipe smokers tend to live longer than non-smokers. I then allow them to enjoy some of my previously enjoy smoke.

I think I'm going to use that.

I have a very long middle finger. But no one has bugged me about it, yet. I'd probably just smile at them and puff away.
