Best way for detail work...jewelers files or dremel stylus?

I'm experimenting with adorning the spines with decorative attributes...vines, snakes, etc. Which is the better route to take? The dremel stylus or jewelers files? or both? With the jewelers files is it necessary that they be diamond coated? If anybody has any sources for where I could get this type of equipment, please let me know. As always, thank you for your help!

There was a guy called Daniel here a few weeks back that had the ultimate file made from a piece of unicorn horn that had been tempered by dragon breath in Atlantis. If you search the forum you might find some info.

As a hardened razor is about the same hardness as a file, a regular file would just skate off it. A diamond file would work, but it would still be tough going, and I can't say how long the files would last. Small dremmel grinding bits might be the answer, but you would not be able to do nice detail work with them.

Awesome work, I think it's a diamond coated jeweler's file being used. By hand, before the steel is heat treated.

On the other hand, check this one out:

Seraphim does some great work and I think he uses a dremel for most of it.
mr ellis is incredible...

seraphim ain't too shabby either...

thanks for those links...

Now that's funny right there. He probably doesn't know him though.

Wow... Atlantis being underwater, I can only imagine the difficult process of keeping a nice live dragon down there, forging unicorn horn files !

Here are just a couple of shots of just some of the pieces I've done. I do have more pics somewhere of the others. On a finished razor a dremel was used as a file won't touch it. On a couple of others which I'm building from scratch the file works fine prior to heat treating. Some of these are the GD's I did which are on the sticky for Hobbyists. Also a bit I did on some custom scales I made.

How did I forget to mention MyCarver's work?? Stunning!
Remember the Gold Dollar contest? Here's a recap:

Starring MyCarver as Bruce Lee and the rest of us as....everybody else.

Mycarver is magic though. I believe the OP was asking what a person with regular human skills should use.

Mark, good to hear from you again. Amazing work as always.

i am kinda sorta hunting for a dental drill set up... with the diamond bits it will do what you need... and its air cooled so it will keep the heat issue to a minimum...

My FIL sells used & reconditioned dental equipment. Send me a PM & I'll give you his contact info.

Thanks guys. As usual you make my day!
I do actually have a couple of micromotors,, one made by a dental company, NSK. The diamond bits do not work at all.

Luckily I didn't finish my GD in time for the contest and saved myself the Bruce Lee action
