"Best Steel Hamburg"

Hey guys, I really did not want to start another "ID this blade" but for the life of me can't figure out anything on this friggin straight. Anyway, the only markings on it say "Best Steel Hamburg" and 40_(0?). It is a big ol' blade and I would be happy to put some shoes on her if she's worth it but if she's a looker in disguise then I will happily send her on her way.

Can anybody help me out here?

I'm going out on a limb here, but I suspect it is made from German blister steel, probably before 1900.

Thanks for the reply Phil! It looks like it should be a good shaver, just wanted to save some dissapointment if somebody had some more direction on the issue.

I'm thinking cocobolo. I have some beautiful cocobolo that is just screaming to get used...

I would have it honed and have a set of scales put on. The blade looks nice, I think it will be a good shaver.

Awesome looking blade.
Just be careful when honing at the heel. If the stabiliser gets in the way it may lift the heel off the stone & cause more wear at the toe.
