With my current selections of tallow-based and vegetable-based soaps, I'd be hard-pressed to point to any one in particular that doesn't provide a slick, smooth and close shave. I'm leaning more towards believing that the brush has more to do with a good or inferior lather than most other factors, water quality not withstanding. I have a couple of horsehair brushes that work great with some specific soaps, badgers that work fine with others, but by far my synthetics, even the cheap ones, perform very well with all my soaps and creams.
Lately I've gotten several new soaps. I've first tried every one using one of several synthetic brushes, primarily a Yaqi Cola. It makes it difficult to settle on the "best" soap, when the brush makes them all perform extraordinarily well.
