Best product for thinning hair?

Ok fine gents.

I am in my early thirties and my hair line is pushing back and thinning up front. I wear my hair in a pretty classic style ala the character Roger Sterling on Mad Men, but I still have dark hair. My hair in itself is not thin, I have always had thick hair. (My poor brother is in his mid twenties and receding, thining, AND has whispy blonde hair- poor kid)

Anything I can use that isn't overbearing yet adds a little to my hair to give a more full look?

Thanks!

Oh, I know there is gonna be no reversing this... I am just not ready to shave my face AND dome quite yet.

j_fro,

For grooming products that can give a "fuller" look to the hair, there are two things I have found that help:

Shampoo/Conditioner formulated for thinning hair. Nothing medicated... Nutri-Ox works well and is cheap and easy to find. Many brands available.

A matte hair paste/wax. Many brands... My favorite is Bedhead Matte Separation Wax. American Crew Fiber is pretty popular and easy to find. To use these, take a small dab and rub it in between your palms vigorously until it heats up and thins out from the friction. Rub your hands through your hair from front to back. Then smooth out and shape your hair a bit from back to front. You can add a fair amount of volume to your hair without it looking like you are using a bunch of gunk.

This has been working for me in the thinning phase where I have lost hair at the temples and the top front is less dense than it used to be. Another year or two I am guessing and it will be head shaving time! Weirdly, I am actually looking forward to head shaving but want to keep hair while it still looks good. I didn't notice any hair loss until I was 40 so it is about freaking time. I also value the frequent use of my....uh....unit....WAY too much to take any of the prescription meds that may or may not do anything. (Of course, I am sure there is a prescription available to treat the side-effects of the original prescription :001_unsur)

I have only found one thing that really works: a 1A blade on an Andis rechargeable.

I am in my early 40s and have been receding and thinning since 17. The sooner you give in to cutting it all off, the sooner you will be truly happy. ;)

Nioxin line of products are excellent. Currently using Nioxin Bionutrient Treatment 2. Thickens my hair very nicely. Biotin capsules may also work.

You know, there is nothing wrong with aging. My advice is to find a good barber who can come up with a shorter hairstyle which is exactly what you need when your hair is thinning. Products and comb-overs can do only so much...
