I haven't actually tried 1805, but from what I read it is very similar to L'Eau de Issey Pour Homme.
I don't know this like a fact, but to me, Issey is the scent that really seems to have catapulted the 90s trend into men's aquatic fragrances. I remember when it first came out women went bananas over it and it sold like crazy. A frag historian may very well tell me there were other aquatic scents well before this one, but I think Issey took off like a rocket and others rushed in with their own similar offerings. It makes prominent use of calone, a synthetic that smells a bit of sea breeze. (Cool Water another prominent scent that makes use of this).
Issey came out in 1994. AdG in 1996. T&H 1805 in 1998. Some in Basenotes have said 1805 is very close to Issey. I'm pretty sure it was T&H's way of joining the aquatic bandwagon.
I say go for the original. I don't like aquatics much, but Issey I do kind of like. It's a bit stronger and longer lasting than many. Women tend to love it. But it is very popular. When I wear it, I run into other guys wearing it all the time.
Still a big, big seller. I've noticed they have gone to the trick of issuing "special edition" bottles (a rock finish, a wood finish). Same juice, just a new looking bottle design to make the people that constantly buy it feel like something about is "new." A different look to that bottle on the dresser.
But it's a great scent. Has a bit more oooomph to me than many aquatics. To me, it's the classic among aquatic scents.
Sel Marin by Heeley apparently smells like you have been swimming in the ocean on its dry down. Repleat with smells of Birch, seaweed, driftwood & salt. Find a sample maybe at Luckyscents.
Believe it or not, Antonio Banderas blue-colored cologne (forget the name) smells pretty darn close to 1805, and it's a lot cheaper. I know you have to seriously suspend your disbelief, but this juice is pretty nice.
Erolfa or Bvlgari Aqva if you want real salty briny sea.
L'Eau Par Kenzo or Issey Miyake if you want pool/chlorine type aquatic.
Silver Mountain Water, 1805, Azzaro Chrome if you want a cool, brisk, bracing-type crisp aquatic that's not to sweet.
There are some other great fruity aquatics from Amouage, Creed,
but since you seem to like 1805, these wouldn't be up there,
AdG and many designer aquatics fit this fruity-aquatic category imo.
And then there's some terrible ones which smell like noxema + turds in a pool (Profvmvm Aqua Di Sale)
