Best DE for about $20

That's my budget. The only two DEs I've used were a Chinese $7 one from Ebay (I think it's a Weishi knockoff/factory second, or third or fourth for that matter) and a Dorco PL-602. The Dorco shaved quite nice. The Chinese razor...didn't. The doors didn't line up on it, and it was hell shaving against the grain with it. The build quality sucked, the only metal part was the doors and head, handle was plastic, eventually broke it by stripping the screw mechanism. So if I understand correctly, the Weishi is the same design, just...not crappy, right? Do the doors on your Weishis line up, did the screw get stripped on it? I'd be kinda interested in getting a Weishi. http://www.ebay.com/itm/special-edition-Weishi-9306Ds-safety-razor-/260971845732#vi-content

Anyway, the razor that it seems I'm most likely to get is the Feather double edge razor. The only complaint I can see about it is it's somewhat light, but it should be a lot heavier than my Dorco which has the same weight as a disposable. Supposedly the doors are supposed to line up well on it. I've heard it's not "aggressive" though, which is probably good for me, given my limited DE experience. http://www.amazon.com/Feather-Double-Edge-Razor-Hi-Stainless-Blades/dp/B003YJ70NY

There's the Lord L6. Everyone likes this razor apparently. I'm leaning towards the Feather/Jatai, but this seems to be the popular razor. It's a somewhat hefty razor, right? I'd probably like that. http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Premium-Double-Metal-Razor/dp/B001QD70JY

I usually use Family Dollar Personnas, I might get a 100 pack of Astras eventually, too. I have pretty bad experience with Dorco blades, so not gonna be using them, despite them being cheapest.

So what do you guys think? Right now I'm stuck in disposable hell, and want a DE again. I could get another PL-602 but it'd probably break soon, my last one broke at the threads (snapped at the handle), mind you it was during vacation and being tossed about in a backpack, so maybe I might not be fair to it's durability. It certainly worked reasonably well as a razor, but I think I want something with a metal head, it'd feel better. I don't shave with anything fancy, just Barbasol shaving cream (oddly enough the fancy gel ones don't work nearly as well for me) I don't use shave soap or a brush yet, maybe will eventually. If you'd suggest any razors I've not listed, feel free to post them.

Thanks very much.

Try bidding on eBay? Do you want to limit yourself to the DE? If so, I vote for the Lord L6.

If you like TTO's, go with a 40's Gillette Superspeed. If you like three piece maybe try a Gillette New or a Tech. All can be had for $20 or less, and will last you a lifetime.

My favorite razors are my NDC Superspeed and a Pre-WWII Fat-handled Tech. I payed less than $20 for the two together. I would keep your eyes out on BST and you should find one of either popping up quite often. I've spent much more for razors, and while I like the expensive razors, I could happily use the inexpensive Gillettes as my daily razor. Also, the vintage Gillettes are built like a tank, and are sure to be in good shape when you pass them on to your grandchildren. My oldest two sons have been using cartridge razors, and now that they are paying for them, are interested in DE razors. Of all the ones I have, I've given them Techs to get started.

If you want to go new:
1. The Lord L6 gets universal good marks.
2. The TTO DE that whippeddog offers. Larry would not carry it unless it was a good quality product.

If used or slightly used is OK:
1. Check in on the Buy-Sell-Trade forum and watch for a used Edwin Jagger or Merkur, or vintage DE.
2. Get adventurous on the Bay and bid on a good user-grade Gillette Tech or Super Speed. Just know your limit and stick to it.

I have been using one of the new Cadet razors from ShaveaBuck for about the last week, and really enjoying it. The model I have is the 3 piece model SS26; there are also Cadet TTO models, but since I don't own one, I can't speak to the quality of those.

The quality of the Cadet is quite nice for it's $24 price point. I would say it's moderately aggressive; the blade gap being significantly larger than that of an Edwin Jagger/ Muhle razor. The razor is solid brass, which is a definite plus.

Take a look here to see all of the models available:

I have owned a Feather Popular in the past, it's much too lightweight for my liking. I have also owned several Lord LP1822 razors, which is a great razor; I prefer a handle with more weight, but you may be fine with the lightweight aluminum handle. The Lord head shaves wonderful though!!

I'd spend the $20 and get a Gillette Tech from ebay. The next available money would buy a pack of Feather blades. The Gillette Tech mated with a Feather blade is a formidable foe of a moderate to tough beard.

Every option listed above is great and should be considered.

My suggestion in order are:
1) Gillette Super Speed (I love my flair tip)
2) Gillette Tech (you can upgrade the handle if you want too)

If you can't find any vintage Gillettes cheaply or in good condition try:
3) Feather Popular (it works well for my needs, but my SS worked just a tad better)
4) Lord DE Razor (L6, I think) "Tech Version" (I have not tried this razor yet but I have heard good things about it and it has the same head design as my Tech)

I suggest you DO NOT GET:
Weishi Chrome (I couldn't get the blade alined at all)
Any razor from Parker (My 99R was a waste of money)

good luck finding THE ONE!

Give the good ole whipped dog a try, he recently started selling de razors.
He's got them in a couple spots

I am in no way affiliated with Larry, but he us a standup guy with very fast and friendly service.

Nice! For $15 each I see 2 Super Speeds (Flair tips) 2 Techs (1 looks like a tech and the other looks like it has Triangular holes so maybe pre-WWII Tech) Plus others I am not sure what they are.

You better get one quick before Larry sells them!

I'm going to go against the grain here :)001_tongu) and recommend you pick up a Flare Tip Superspeed. It's TTO and just a fabulous razor. Not too mild. Not too aggressive. And built like a tank.

There are tons of them on eBay in your price range.

If you're looking for new, you can't go wrong with a Feather Popular. If your looking for vintage, poke around your local antique stores. For under $20, I've found aristocrats, super adjustables, fatboys, old types, news, superspeeds, and enough SE's to start a collection. While not always pretty, they'll all shave great and you can get a few to try for your price point.

My $00.02 worth

Get a nice gentle razor like a Tech and a small sample pack of blades.

Depending on where you live someone might even PIF you a starter kit, I live in New Zealand so the postage might be silly but there are plenty of good folks on this forum that live much closer.

Welcome to the forum :biggrin1:
