What's new

best balm for me?

Hi,
I'm looking for a new balm. I've used the DR Harris AS milk, but it may be a bit heavy, and the smell doesn't suit me. I've tried the GR aftershave balm, but it seems a little oily for my skin.

I think I actually need the original DR Harris AS milk - but you can't get it. So I was considering the Mamma Bears unscented summer balm or the shave den unscented Milk. Does anyone here have experience with these? How do they compare to each other (and how like the original Harris AS milk are they?)

many thanks,
Petertb

I use Nivea Sensitive After Shave Balm and it works great for me. Things like this are usually too user specific.

Shaving Essentials has a very nice line of Wesley & Scott balms. For whatever reason that page on their site does not come up just now, but I do recommend checking them out. John Crissman may well provide a sample.

I've been a Harris Milk junkie for years and don't mind the new formulation. But the old was better. I recently acquired pre de Provence aftershave balm. The scent is amazing and very addictive. It is proving to be the most soothing balm I've ever used. The shea butter is pure magic. I highly recommend it.

I use a balm every day, and have a handful. Right now, I am really liking Saint Charles Shave's Avocado balm. If you have a Bath and Body Works near you, you could see if they have any of the silver Bigelow balms left; they are discontinuing it, so it is mega cheap right now, and very nice. I also use the Nivea balm mentioned above; the best under-eight-dollar balm you can get, in my opinion. I love Musgo Real's balm, but the scent is not what I want in the summer. I have not tried the Pre De Provence, but I have heard great things about it, and plan on snagging some soon.

Of TSD and SCS, I favor TSD for balms/milks. It seems a little less sticky (except for the Oakmoss Lavendula from SCS, which I love). I have yet to try Mama Bears, but I am looking forward to it.

+1 on the Pre De Provence. I have come to the determination recently that it is hands down the best aftershave balm I have ever used.
Even better then my beloved Proraso. Its got a unique scent & not to mention my face feels smooth as silk after. They must use high quality ingredients in it. Pair it with the shave soap and WOW :w00t: it makes for an out of this world combination :thumbup1:

You can't go wrong with ANYTHING from this small U.S. company, from my experience. First, their products are super low in price, but seem to be exceptionally high in quality. I've been using their "Savory Rose" aftershave milk. Very light, wonderful fragrance, nothing but natural ingredients. It also comes as a traditional aftershave, and comes in several other fragrances (Lavender, Bay Rum etc.) It's like 12 bucks a bottle, and one will last a full year easily!!

They also have one called "Nutriment", which is a really neat, plant-based gel that is not sticky and dries quickly. 5% alcohol, so there's no sting and it won't dry you out. It's lime scented and is fabulous.

I love their stuff, and have sent them lots of positive feedback. Their Hand Help lotion for men is equally great, goes on slightly greasy but that quickly goes away and the moisture lasts and lasts. Nice foot balm too.

Seriously, you'd think I work for the company, but I don't. I'm just really happy to find a small company with such a vast range of low-priced, excellent toiletries for men. They have small samplers too for cheap cheap, so if you want to try without going all the way, you can. Check them out!
