Besides MdC - I'm through buying vegetable based soaps

Yeah I've tried too many to list. LaToja Manatiales, Institute Karite, GFT, PdP yada yada yada....

A good tallow based soap just kicks the crap out of all of them (Martin de Candre being the exception).

I think tallow soaps are over-rated. Williams contains tallow, Klar Seifen does not. But we can agree to disagree

Have you tried any JabonMan soaps by any chance?

It's really a YMMV thing. What doesn't work for you might work wonders for others. I really like the french made veggie based soaps, they give me a really slick shave.

Greg,
Why do you attribute the quality difference to the absence of tallow? Doesn't the excellent performance of the MdC suggest that tallow may not be the differentiator? Have you eliminated all the other potential causal factors that might influence why you like one soap and not another?

I ask because after trying nearly everything out there at one point or another, I no longer even check to see if Tallow is an ingredient or not. It just hasn't been reliably correlated to performance in my shave den.

Of course, if you've found soaps you like, then who cares. I'll bet you have enough soaps as it is without cluttering things up with Calani or Klar Seifen or Dr. Dittmar etc.

Wow, you didn't care for La Toja!?!

I find that stick to be an exceptional shave soap. I'll admit that I have a bias for tallow based soaps, but that veggie stick makes a great lather (and smells manly!). It is back-to-back with MdC in my rotation.

The one great truth of B&B: YMMV

I've tried the French Shea butter soaps and Klar soaps and found them wanting.

You can argue the chemistry all you want. My face tells me a good tallow based soap is better.

Nobody calls Williams a good soap so that example gets tossed out.

Have at it, I guess. Use what you like.

Right now I have 4 soaps in my rotation: two are tallow and two are veggie. The veggie soaps are both RazoRock LaFamiglia soaps. I can't tell the difference between the lather I get with these and the lather I get with my tallow soaps.

Have to agree Ive had better luck with tallow based soaps in general and they tend to be lest costly than the high end veggie options.
