What's new

Beginning to think that I may never find my perfect shave

So I'm messing around with a puck of VDH this evening, trying to figure out why I can't get a usable lather from it, when I realized something:

I may be too lazy to ever find shave nirvana.

Seriously, I might be satisfied enough with the products that I have figured out that I never really give new items a fair shot.

How am I supposed to justify buying new soaps, blades, brushes, or razors if I don't really want to use them?

VDH Deluxe gives me the best shaves of any soap or cream I have ever used, including higher-end and artisan-made products.

I've found most every shave software delivers about the same results across the board. Whether a person likes the ingredients or fragrance is about the only difference, or allergies may come into play into their decision. Myself I like to find a core of products that are my go to and only have a few other items for a change of pace occasionally.

this doesn't help! i need motivation! how am i supposed to justify stocking a ridiculous shave den if I can't claim some sort of active quest for improvement. :biggrin1:

Just pick the one thing you like most and buy 10 of those. Your den will be stocked in no time. Ha

Then you can put them in fancy containers to dress things up and look like you have tons of variety!

I went through the various ADs, and am now getting rid of the extras and sticking with those items that work the best. Surprisingly, most of my final keepers ended up being the less expensive items, especially soap.

BTW, I've been able to overcome most soap issues using a drier brush, and adding water slowly. I haven't found one yet that didn't make a good lather.

I really believe that we all are searching for that one "perfect" shave, and just when we think we've found it we start tinkering with it and messing it up again. With that said, I wonder if we'll ever be satisfied? :confused1 :crying: :scared:

Good God, man, take hold of yourself! You're an American, you don't need some silly, effete, reason for getting stuff!!

VDH is a good product but gets a lot of "boo" from many because it is a low cost product.

If you don't have the drive to acquire, don't feel bad. Stick around here and you will be broke and stumbling over your shaving items in no time :001_smile

I think that's the great thing about it. There is always evolution. I don't think it's about being satisfied, I am satisfied with my shaves, it's the process that is fun. New technique, new products, it's all fun and never really gets old!

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
VDH has been my go to soap for a while now, mainly because thats the only soap i have, but its awesome! it took me more than a few tries to get a good lather out of it so heres my trick, i use a boar brush, i soak the brush for a few minutes, and i run some hot water over the entire puck and let it sit while i prep my face and tools. when im ready to build my lather i empty the water off the puck down the drain, grab the brush and give it a gental shake just so the water isnt dripping off it and start swirling, and spinning, and flattening, and just going at it with the brush and VDH, i do this for bout 1-2 minutes, it gets a soapy mess but i love it, usually its kind of runny but then i face lather and there is plenty of good soap on the brush, so i just go to town on my face and end up getting enough lather for as many passes as i want.

i was in your shoes once, i bought VDH, tried it, couldn't get a lather so threw it out. then bought it again and just abused it until it worked.

Lazy? Well there is stuff for travellers that may satisfy even lazy ppl rofl. Shave sticks and the like, I can dig lazy as some times I get to the point in my personal life where I'll not feel like it one day or another. Why I got tube creams, well aside I love them.
As for VDH...never used it I don't think, or is that the pink puck I can get at Wal Mart? If so then yes I tried it, I couldn't get it to function either but back then I was also a noob too so rofl. Hang in there bud.

I think there is a ton of truth to this. For as much as we all love variety, sometimes it can be a horrible curse. From reading various posts around here, it certainly seems to be a prime downfall for beginning wet shavers.

Perfect. I feel so much better now that I have an answer for my wife the next time she questions my spending habits.
