Beginner DE shaving equipment?

Okay I have a question that some of us new to DE shaving keep seeing a beginner set-up or newbie one.. I have lurked this site for well over a year and finally got into DE shaving a few months after that. My funds were limited so I was a little upset when I had to settle for a Gillette Fatboy, read the reviews on here in which most were very positive, but I keep seeing people on here talk about their goto razor and how most of these are fairly expensive.. I thought oh well, I guess I can't get a shave as good as some others.
My boar Brush cost me a few bucks and my soap was col conks soap. I read about Badger brushes and how they were the king of brushes for a lot of people, especially the ones that cost well over $100.00 dollars and in some cases well over 300.00. Same with some soaps, col conk was discussed mostly in a positive way, but alot more expensive ones seemed to be preferred.

After a few months of shaving I thought I would improve my shaving with a BETTER brush and use cream, a good expensive cream that was highly rated. I bought a tub of E-shave and TOBS. I wanted a really good brush but saw the beginner brushes that were not really what I wanted I wanted an expensive one.. I was not a noob anymore. I settled for a Franks, thought I would try it after some reviews.. I know it's not as good as a more expensive hand made brush..

My new rotation was set, I shaved like this for many more months. My wife thought it would be nice to get me some expensive things for xmas for my shaving.. She new I liked my Brush and my Gillette, also my open comb razor I bought off my barber.. She always heard me say I was proud of my set but wish I had the best shaving supplies as some other people...

Well I had now bought some more cheaper products like Proraso and palmolive . My wife on the other hand bought me an expensive razor and a better badger brush.. Well let's just say I have found something out. My 2 old and basically free razors shave better or as good as my new one..
My new Badger does the exact same thing as my Franks, to tell you the truth my cheap cheap Omega boar does the exact same thing too. Just doesn't soak up the hot water as much as a badger is the only diff to my skin. My expensive creams like E-shave TOBS, and samples of CF did not do anything that my cheap ones didn't.. My free razors shave me better with feathers, then the one my wife bought me.

I would just like peoples opinions, I wish I would have asked someone on here more candidly about Newb and beginner shaving supplies, alot of new people on here looking to start DE shaving might think the same thing I did. They might think they need to spend alot of money, because the cheap stuff is classified mostly as beginner equipment. I think this is False. The more expensive stuff Does not give you a better shave.. Your brush will do the exact same thing as a $500.00 brush, I don't know where the Beginner thing came from esp when it comes to brushes..

Maybe someone who is not sure about DE shaving because of the cost and the assumption that because some of the cheaper products are talked about in terms relating to being for a Newb, will read this and know that this is not the case at least in terms with myself..

One more question is Feather blades.. I started with a sample pack. The one that I like the best was the feather, it was scary at first because of what I read about them. I have only cut myself a few times, when I first started, I found that if I use my razor the proper way I don't get any cuts anytime. They thing I liked about the feathers were less tugging, they slice through the hairs, they do last less then other blades though.. So why do some people cut themselves on diff blades, I can see diff issues with tugging and what not, but not weepers or cuts if your using the same technique. I love my DE shaving, my face has had zero ingrown hairs since I started. Just hope New people read this and and decide to start shaving this way.. You can get the best possible shave from some very cheap products.

Beware of the Newb or Beginner tag. I got Fooled, but enjoyed the learning experience :)

Peace guys.. BTW sorry about sentence structure and grammar, it's Sunday and I am having a few Cold ones

The "best" tools have nothing to do with how much they cost. It's what works for you. Yes, we all spend a lot of money on this crazy hobby, but that spending is completely unneccessary. You can get great shaves with very inexpensive equipment and software. For me, I'm just sick--I love collecting the gear.

Hmm, I wouldn't of considered a Fatboy settling.... But that's my opinion I suppose. I was gifted my grandpa's Fatboy, and it's the centerpiece of my collection. As far as brushes go, IMHO my Kent silvertip is far superior to my VDH cheapo brush from CVS. I agree with you that you don't HAVE to spend alot of money to get a great shave. If your happy with your setup, then thats all that matters right? I think the collecting aspect for me is what I like.

I think it's all about finding what works for you personally. I just got some of the E-Shave cream for Christmas, and while I like the scent, it doesn't lather nearly as easily as the Art of Shaving cream that I had been using. I guess I'm a little different than the average person who takes up wet shaving in that I basically impulse bought an Art of Shaving kit with a Fine Badger brush (neither the cream or the brush being especially cheap). That was how I started my journey about 9 months ago. I then bought a Muhle R89 razor to go with it, and while that is certainly not the most expensive razor you can buy, it's definitely not a budget razor either. I've been trying other things, but I think I'm working my way to the middle (finding nice things that are neither budget or high end) than I am starting at the bottom and coveting nicer things.

I'm still new to DE wetshaving, just got into it about a month ago now. And my shaving den is now filling up with product. I, too, often wonder if he super expensive brushes and razors are really that much better. I love my SOC boar, and I feel it is a good price, but I often wonder how much better a Rooney would be. I just bought some MdC soap, but at four times the price of Tabac or Cella, is it going to be four times better? I'm still using my one and only DE razor (Edwin Jagger D89L), and have no real interest in buying another one beyond a nice Gillette (soaps have become my vice).

Often in this world, you get what you pay for. But, I think the law of diminishing returns starts to kick in after awhile. So, yes, cheaper (or, shall we say, more affordable) products can be and often are quite good.

The law of diminishing returns definitely applies to DE supplies as well. That said, a good badger brush is worth owning, and it will last a very long time.

You can get a wonderful brush such as a Simpson Col. for around $70. Sometimes less if you watch BST. Cella soap is not very expensive and most people think it is a great soap. Add a Merkur Progress (Long Handle) or Futur razor and you are set up with very good equipment. Feathers are great blades, but there are a lot of other very good ones also. Blades are pretty cheap and you can experiment with small lots.

The most important thing is finding what you enjoy using. Price and reputation only tell you what other people think of it.
