Beer/Cigar Pairings

Hello there, this is my first post here so please bear with any breach of etiquette and I'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'm not a very big drinker, so I usually don't pair my cigars or pipes with whiskey or scotch or anything like that, but I do enjoy a good beer with my smoke. I was wondering if you guys out there had any good beers that paired especially well with a cigar. If it helps, I usually like a heavier cigar- but I'm interested in hearing any suggestions you have. Thank you very much!

Hayslip,

I had a friend introduce me to what he called "good beer", mostly Belgian styles.
I love to drink Old Horizontal from Victory Brewing, La Fin Du Monde from Unibroue, or Tripel Karmeliet, among others when cigar smoking if I don't go for spirits instead.

Good Luck!

I have mixed feelings about this. I don't like to pair drinks with cigars, if I'm smoking something new or I know is going to be a good smoke, because I want to be able to pick up all the nuances of the cigar. However If I'm just going to relax I'll drink whatever strikes me at the moment.

Both a Pilsner and a Dry Stout would be good choices with something with a light wrapper because of their lack of sweetness. With a natural wrapper I'd move away from the Pilsner and more to a Red Lager or Brown Ale, and With a Maduro or Sun Grown wrapper I'd do a dark ale like a Poter or Stout. The darker wrapper are usually sweeter so as the wrapper gets darker I'd go for something with less hops. The flavors of coffee and chocolate don't' go well with the bitterness of a IPA, IMO.

Our friend really knows his beer. Those are great choices with choice cigars.

Just to echo most of the people above, darker more rounded beer tends to work better with cigars.

Church Key's Cherry-Chocolate Stout is fantastic with a cigar (especially something like a Bolivar), as is Mill St's Coffee Porter. If you're going with a lighter style cigar (I do love my Upmanns) something nice and hoppy works too - Dogfishhead's 60-minute IPA is great.

A guy I used to work with always drank Milk with his cigars. Always struck me as odd, but I'll probally try it one day, when I get brave enough.

If I drink beer with a cigar, it will usually be a Shiner Black or Blonde. I have been known to drink Corona con lima while smoking a cigar but the lime tends to jack up my taste buds and I don't get much flavor from the cigar.

Perhaps the best beverage to drink while smoking a cigar or pipe is just plain ol' water.

You probably want a beer that can hold its own against a cigar. Guiness is a step in the right direction. IMO, a dry stout is too light (not in color) of a beer and would get completely overwhelmed by the taste of a cigar. You might try some big beers. Russian Imperial Stout, Robust Porter come to mind. Rauchbier or Smoked Porter would be an obvious choice too. IPA's could work, but I'm not sure how the bitterness would pair with a cigar. A nice aged barleywine might be a good choice too.

Wow, it sounds like I've got a lot of new beers to try out! I've had a few of those, but not near all of them. I usually do stick with water if nothing else is available, and it always seems to do the trick. But its nice to have other options.

Hot summer days: hefeweizen with a strong dose of lemon. I like the way the acidity of the lemon compliments the cigar.

Any other time: Guinness. No explanation needed.

Probably the best suggestion so far. You really do need a beer that can hold it's own with a cigar.

I actually like IPA with cigars.

I don't think "beer" as in lager or ale is a good match up with a cigar.

However, a "stout" would help your cigar smoking experience.

I would recommend a coffee based stout:drool: if you can find one.

Good Luck.

If you can get Terrapin's beer, their Wake N' Bake Coffee Oatmeal Imperial Stout is amazing!

I usually prefer to drink black coffee or water with a cigar, but a Young's Double Chocolate Stout with a cigar males an AWESOME pairing, and I don't even really care for chocolate.

This weekend I had a Padilla Habana with a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. They both tasted pretty good.
