What's new

Because I Just Know I'll Wind up with Another Straight

Feather SS is on the way and for some reason there is little doubt I will probably wind up selling one of my DE razors and getting a new straight (guess I changed my mind about all the honing chores; saw on You Tube that it really does not look to be that difficult, so......).

There is something about the Hart Steel product that certainly gets my attention. The fact that it is kind of a custom build I find appealing.

Along with the Hart, I'm also focused on a Boker Tree Brand w/micarta scales, a DOVO Natural and a DOVO Master.

I know the Hart is 1/4 hollow and the others are full hollow. Not certain if (to me) the difference would be noticeable. I couldn't tell you what grind my last straight was.

I'll be working out with the Feather SS and will keep the Muhle R41 in rotation for sure, but when the planets are aligned, I will be getting a straight, so any advice will be appreciated

No advice on a new striaght for you yet...still too new to straight shaving to help there. But if you're going to learn to hone, what I would recommend is that before you take a chance on ruining a new blade, pick up a cheap one from ebay, and use it to learn honing techniques. Sharpening a straight razor is not the same as sharpening a knife or a chisel. I'm experimenting with my cheap ebay razor, and I think I may have it down close to where it needs to be. Now I feel more comfortable for when my good razor needs a cleanup.

Good advice. I bought a $4.99 Chinese special from ebay I will use as a practice piece.

it would likely be noticeable. the Hart is a substantial razor in heft compared to your run of the mill 5/8s hollow and pretty rigid

probably something that you could learn, because the range from wedge to extra full really changes the feel of the shave. and according to some arebetter for some types of beards based on the flex or no flex. i don't buy that too much, but some do

If you find the Hart razor appealing, I would get it. There is no such thing as a "starter straight razor". In my experience grind doesn't matter much in terms of shaving results. I like them all.

Another voter for getting an inexpensive razor to practice honing.

If you like shaving with the Feather SS, I recommend getting your first hone (lapping film, coticule or jnat) will all do the job. If you get a Norton 4k/8k, be prepared to get a 1K to set bevels and 12k for finishing; I prefer lapping film over Nortons.
