Beard Softeners besides Hair Conditioner?

Anyone know of something!? I'd rather use a product specifically made for facial hair. Not a preshave goopy oil. Something to soften my hair before the shave. Normal prep doesn nothing to my steel beard, but hair conditioner works wonders! Like I said though I'd rather use a more manly product!

Musgo Real Glyce Lime Oil Soap (a.k.a MR GLO). Wet your face, rub the soap over it, work it in with wet hands, let it sit for 30 seconds and rinse off. Then lather up like normal and shave. YMMV of course, but it works for me.

I've always used a glycerine based soap like Pears or Neutrogena. Glycerine hydrates hair and softens it. It is easy to find and not very expensive so give it a shot and see if it works for you.

Most ASBs can be used as a pre-shave.

And letting your regular lather soak in for a minute or two will do wonders to soften even the toughest of beards.

Noxema cold cream, softens hair nicely, I put it on in the shower after washing my face and let it sit until I dry off and load my brush, then off with warm water and shave.

The Musgo Real Lime soap is great.

To tell the truth, though, I usually just apply a thin, watery pre-lather, using the same soap (or soap+cream) that I'm using to build my real lather. I let the pre-lather sit on my face while I build up the real lather, which I apply right on top of the pre-lather -- no muss, no fuss. (I'm a face-latherer, by the way.) A thin, watery, sudsy lather is a good way to hydrate the beard. At least, it works for me.

+1 to the Proraso

and

+1 to letting the lather soak before your 1st pass. I don't need to do this with DEs but is needed with straights. My beard is 'made of steel' as well.

+1 on the Proraso Pre and Post I use it before every shave and I am able to notice a difference in my shave. I have used the AOS pre shave gel and I did like it but im not shure I will be buying any soon. I may put it on my Christmas list but i know of other things i want more.
