I see beards with very uhm...interesting patterns. Waves, tribal, etc. I have enough trouble keeping a goatee even. What are these people using to get such precise detail?

Those small, nimble battery/electric trimmers, I would imagine. Too much trouble to do with a DE, SE, or straight.
Defenitly electric trimmers. Then it's a letter of "lining up" with a straight, then shaving however proffered around the rest.

Lot of work it seems.
I'm growing my beard out, then I plan on having a barber trim it to the fade I want and I hope I can maintain it after that.
Those electric trimmers made you see on TV. I got a natural line when I smile that a set my goatee too. I use a SE and some cream to keep the edges clean and nice but I want to get one of these outfits with the guard and such to give me easy of control.
